Ademola Lookman: Representing Nigeria Has Been a Career Blessing
Ademola Lookman has opened up about the profound impact of representing Nigeria on his football career, calling it a blessing and a turning point.
Speaking with Sporty TV, the 27-year-old Super Eagles winger expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play for his country and pride in the unity and growth of the team.
“It was massive for me because that was a big turning point in my career,” Lookman shared. “Ever since I’ve put on the Super Eagles jersey, it has been fruitful. We have been able to achieve together as a team, and we are still growing as a team. The togetherness of the team is something very special.”
Born in Wandsworth, Greater London, to Nigerian parents, Lookman began his international career with England, representing the Three Lions at youth level. He was part of the squad that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017.
However, in February 2022, Lookman made the bold decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria, making his Super Eagles debut a month later in a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

Lookman’s first major tournament with Nigeria came at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he shone brightly. The talented winger scored three goals, provided one assist in seven appearances, and earned a spot in the prestigious Team of the Tournament.
Reflecting on the Super Eagles’ AFCON campaign, Lookman said, “We showed that in the last AFCON. We got to the final, but unfortunately, we came up a bit short.” Despite the setback, Lookman remains optimistic about the future of the team and their collective potential.
As one of Nigeria’s standout players, Lookman’s journey from a young star with England to a vital part of the Super Eagles highlights the power of embracing one’s roots and the joy of playing for one’s homeland.
