Ex-Ooni Queen, Radio Boss, and School Principal Remanded in Prison
The tragic Ibadan stampede that claimed the lives of 35 minors has taken a dramatic legal turn as three key suspects, including a former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, were remanded in Agodi Prison pending further investigations.
Others remanded are the owner of Agidigbo FM, Mr. Hamzat Oriyomi, and the Principal of Islamic School, Bashorun, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi.
Court Charges and Proceedings
The suspects appeared before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan, facing four counts of:
1. Conspiracy
2. Acceleration of death
3. Negligent acts causing harm
4. Failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities
Despite pleas from their legal counsels to prevent prison remand, Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi ruled that the accused be held in prison custody until January 13, 2025, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Legal Maneuvering and Counsel Arguments
Counsel to Oriyomi Hamzat, Mr. Ridwan Adekunle, argued that there was a prior agreement with police authorities to detain his client in police custody rather than prison, citing health concerns.
Similarly, the lawyer representing the school principal, Mr. Olajide, pleaded for his client to be kept under police supervision instead. However, the court dismissed these pleas, citing the seriousness of the charges.
The case, marked C/2024, was instituted by the Commissioner of Police, and the legal advice from the DPP will determine whether the suspects have a case to answer.

Health Concerns and Emotional Reactions
The suspects’ emotional and physical states have raised concerns. Oriyomi Hamzat reportedly suffered shock, while Queen Naomi allegedly collapsed while in police custody, prompting calls for adequate medical attention.
Government’s Stand on Justice
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Governor Seyi Makinde vowed that a thorough investigation would be conducted and all culpable parties brought to justice.
“No stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice for the victims and their families,” the governor emphasized.
Public Reaction and Security Challenges
Security agents faced chaotic scenes outside the courthouse as supporters of the accused tried to prevent their detention. The crowd expressed mixed emotions, with some pleading for leniency and others demanding justice for the victims.
What’s Next?
The court adjourned the case to January 13, 2025, leaving the suspects in prison custody until then. The DPP’s advice will determine whether the suspects will face full prosecution or be cleared of the charges.
As the legal process unfolds, Nigerians await answers and accountability for the heartbreaking loss of young lives. The incident continues to serve as a sobering reminder of the need for safety measures at public gatherings.
