Activist Lawyer Dele Farotimi Regains Freedom, Maintains Allegations Against Afe Babalola

Prominent activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has regained his freedom after meeting stringent bail conditions imposed by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court.

Farotimi, who was released from the Ekiti State Correctional Centre on Tuesday, remained resolute in his allegations against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), Afe Babalola.

Farotimi’s release followed the fulfilment of a ₦30 million bail bond along with two sureties—one of whom had to be a property owner. The court also mandated him to surrender his passport and refrain from granting media interviews after his release.

Farotimi’s Defense: Truth Over Fear

Addressing journalists shortly after his release, Farotimi emphasized his commitment to speaking the truth, describing it as his only weapon in the fight against injustice.

“It is not ever an easy journey when you are fighting evil,” Farotimi said. “But some years back, before I started this work, God told me that the truth is enough. It is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria.”

He further declared that he has never lied against anyone, insisting that his claims—detailed in his controversial book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’—are based on facts.

The Arrest and Allegations

Farotimi was arrested earlier this month over allegations of defamation against Afe Babalola, as detailed in his book, which critiques Nigeria’s judicial system. The arrest sparked debates over freedom of expression and accountability within the legal and political landscape.

His detention drew widespread attention, with activists and supporters calling for his release and defending his right to express critical views about the nation’s justice system.

Bail Conditions and Restrictions

While Farotimi’s release marks a temporary relief, the court’s conditions impose significant restrictions, particularly the ban on media interviews. Legal observers suggest this clause may signal attempts to limit Farotimi’s public engagements amid ongoing legal proceedings.

A Symbol of Resistance?

Farotimi’s case has reignited discussions about freedom of speech and the role of activists in challenging institutional structures. Many supporters view his defiance as symbolic of the struggle for a transparent and accountable justice system in Nigeria.

What’s Next?

As Farotimi prepares for his next court appearance, all eyes remain fixed on the unfolding legal battle and its implications for human rights advocacy and freedom of expression in Nigeria.

Stay tuned for further updates as this case continues to shape national conversations on justice and accountability.
