Nigerian Army Captures Notorious Bandit Leader Linked to Emir’s Murder
Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade have captured Bako Wurgi, also known as Baka NaGarba, a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer believed to be behind the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Isa Mohammad Bawa, in Sokoto State.
The operation that led to Wurgi’s arrest was conducted on Saturday, following a tip-off that he was receiving treatment for injuries at a hospital in Shinkafi, Zamfara State. Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert in the Lake Chad Basin region, shared the development on his social media handle on Sunday.
How Wurgi Was Apprehended
According to Makama, intelligence reports revealed that Wurgi sustained multiple cuts and gunshot wounds during a clash with a rival group. Security forces acted swiftly, apprehending him at the hospital where he was being treated.
During the operation, two accomplices managed to escape, but troops detained another individual who had transported Wurgi to the hospital using a tricycle.
The Crimes Behind the Name
Bako Wurgi is allegedly connected to the abduction and murder of the Emir of Gobir earlier this year. The Emir was kidnapped on July 9, 2024, in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area, Sokoto State, and tragically killed on August 22 after ransom negotiations collapsed. Reports indicate that the negotiations involved demands for cash and motorcycles, but the deal fell through.

Wurgi, described as an arms smuggler with international ties, is also reportedly related to Bello Turji, a well-known bandit leader. His son, Sani Duna, is suspected of serving as a getaway driver for Turji, underlining the deep familial connections within the bandit network.
A Major Milestone in the Fight Against Banditry
Makama described Wurgi’s capture as a significant achievement in the ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry in Nigeria’s Northwest region. He noted that Wurgi’s arrest strikes a critical blow to the criminal syndicate operating in the area.
The bandit leader is currently in custody at an undisclosed location while security forces intensify efforts to track down his fleeing accomplices.
This arrest underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to restoring peace in the Northwest, a region plagued by insecurity and violence.
