Police Arrest Individual for Spreading Disinformation: Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Fake News

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reinforced its commitment to combating the spread of fake news and disinformation by arresting a 38-year-old suspect, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State. The arrest, which took place on December 8, 2024, highlights the NPF’s determination to maintain public trust and uphold national peace and security.

According to a statement released by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the suspect allegedly operated multiple social media accounts to disseminate false and inciting content aimed at provoking the public against the Nigeria Police. This act of disinformation, the Police noted, undermines public trust, threatens societal cohesion, and poses a grave risk to national security.

Zero Tolerance for Fake News

The Nigeria Police reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on actions that jeopardize national stability or tarnish the reputation of government institutions. “Such acts are criminal and punishable under the law,” the statement emphasized, urging citizens to use social media and other communication platforms responsibly.

Warning Against Misuse of Social Media

The NPF also issued a strong warning against the misuse of social media to propagate fake news or incite unrest. Citizens were reminded that the peace and unity of the nation rely on the responsible dissemination of information.

Commitment to National Security

Reassuring Nigerians of its dedication to upholding law and order, the Police affirmed its resolve to identify and prosecute individuals or groups engaging in activities that threaten Nigeria’s peace and security.

The public is encouraged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to foster a safe and secure environment, as the fight against disinformation is a shared responsibility.
