FG Launches DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Program to Boost AI and Data Science Talent in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Program, an initiative aimed at equipping Nigerians with foundational and advanced competencies in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The program, announced on Thursday by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, is part of the government’s broader 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative.

Empowering Nigeria’s Digital Workforce

The DeepTech_Ready program is designed to provide young Nigerians with a unique opportunity to gain specialized skills in AI and data science, key areas driving the global digital economy. Announcing the launch on social media, Dr. Tijani emphasized that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s vision of becoming a leading hub for digital innovation.

Who Can Apply?

According to the official program website, the training is open to:

3MTT Fellows

Individuals with basic to intermediate knowledge in relevant technical fields


The six-month program will combine self-paced online learning, on-site training, and virtual mentorship to ensure participants acquire practical skills.

Participants in the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling program will undergo training in specialized fields, including:

Advanced Data Analysis and Visualization

Data Science/Machine Learning

Data Architecture

Geospatial Data Science

Computer Vision

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Supported by Google’s N2.8 Billion Grant

The initiative is powered by a N2.8 billion grant from Google.org as part of its broader commitment to AI talent development in Nigeria. The grant, which was announced last year, supports the Ministry’s AI-driven upskilling initiatives, including:

1. DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme – Training 20,000 young Nigerians in AI and data science.


2. Experience AI Programme – Equipping 25,000 educators with tools to teach 125,000 young people about AI.


3. Government AI Campus Programme – Upskilling policymakers and public servants on AI policymaking.

The DeepTech_Ready initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Data Science Nigeria (DSN), a leading AI-focused non-profit organization. In addition, Google’s support extends to the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) AI Fund, reinforcing Nigeria’s ambition to become a major player in AI research and innovation.
