Guinea-Bissau Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló Swears Himself In As President
Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embaló has sworn himself in as the new president of Guinea-Bissau on Thursday.
Embaló defy a bitter ongoing row about the outcome of the December 29 elections.
“I swear on my honour to defend the constitution, to respect it and have it respected,” Umaro said before a crowd at an upscale hotel in the West African state’s capital, Bissau.

The ceremony took place despite a continuing legal and political battle over the official results. He defeated candidate Domingos Simoes Pereira who has filed a suit at the Supreme Court.
Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco is the president-elect of Guinea-Bissau. He is a political scientist and military officer who previously served as prime minister between 18 November 2016 and 16 January 2018.
