CAF Orders Replay of Cameroon vs. Kenya AFCON Qualifier Over Match-Fixing Scandal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered a replay of the 2025 AFCON qualifier between Cameroon and Kenya after an extensive investigation uncovered credible evidence of match-fixing.
This shocking development was confirmed in an official letter to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), in which CAF revealed that FIFA’s Integrity and Compliance Unit, working alongside CAF and international sports integrity bodies, found irregularities in the October 16, 2024, match played in Yaoundé.
Match-Fixing Scandal Rocks AFCON Qualifiers
A forensic review of match footage and intelligence reports pointed to manipulation involving multiple individuals, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the game.
One name stands out in the controversy: Kenyan goalkeeper Patrick Matasi. His actions during the match have been flagged for potential violations of FIFA’s anti-match-fixing regulations. If found guilty, Matasi and other implicated individuals face severe consequences, including possible lifetime bans from football.
CAF has instructed the FKF to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and has mandated the provisional suspension of any implicated players or officials from all FKF-sanctioned competitions until the case is resolved.
The Replay & Financial Implications
To maintain fairness, CAF will cover all expenses for the rematch, ensuring that neither Kenya nor Cameroon bears any financial burden. The replay will take place at a neutral venue within the next 60 days, with CAF set to announce the location soon.
This decision significantly impacts the AFCON 2025 qualification picture, as Cameroon won both fixtures against Kenya—a 1-0 away win before demolishing the Harambee Stars 4-1 in the return leg. With the integrity of the matches now in question, a replay could alter the final standings in Group F.
A Stain on African Football?
Match-fixing scandals have plagued global football, but a CAF-ordered replay at this stage of an AFCON qualification campaign is unprecedented. This raises critical questions:
How deep does the match-fixing rot go?
Are other AFCON qualifiers compromised?
Will FIFA and CAF use this as a stepping stone to clean up African football?
For now, all eyes are on CAF and FIFA as they navigate this high-profile controversy. One thing is clear—this scandal has rocked AFCON 2025 before the tournament even kicks off.
LASU Recalls Suspended Professors After Clearance in Certificate Racketeering Probe
The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has officially reinstated Professor Tajudeen Olumoko and Professor Hammed Mutalib, following the conclusion of an internal investigation that absolved them of alleged involvement in certificate racketeering and extortion.
This decision comes one year after their suspension in November 2023, when both professors were named in a media report exposing a certificate-selling syndicate at the university. Allegations suggested that forged LASU certificates were being sold for N2 million to N3 million, depending on the course of study, with Professor Olumoko, the former Dean of Student Affairs, allegedly linked to the scandal.
Cleared and Reinstated: LASU’s Verdict
Despite the controversy, a thorough internal probe by LASU authorities found no evidence linking Professors Olumoko and Mutalib to the illegal activities. Following this, the university’s management quietly reinstated them, with Olumoko resuming his academic duties in November 2024.
When contacted for confirmation, LASU’s Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, stated:
“Professor Olumoko has been reinstated because the investigation has been completed, and he has been cleared.”
Attempts to get further clarification from the Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, were unsuccessful, as messages sent to her via SMS and WhatsApp remained unanswered at press time.
A Case of Media Frenzy or Justice Served?
The reinstatement of the two professors raises several key questions:
Were they falsely accused, or was there insufficient evidence to prosecute?
Did the initial media reports exaggerate the claims, or was this a case of internal cover-up?
What steps has LASU taken to prevent future occurrences of certificate racketeering?
While the university has cleared their names, this scandal serves as a wake-up call for LASU and other Nigerian higher institutions to tighten internal controls against academic fraud, certificate forgery, and extortion-related activities.
Transparency & the Need for Accountability
While LASU deserves credit for conducting a transparent investigation, the university owes its students, staff, and the general public a detailed report of its findings. The silence from key officials, including the Public Relations Coordinator, only fuels speculation.
If indeed Professors Olumoko and Mutalib were falsely accused, then their reinstatement is a vindication of their integrity. However, if racketeering truly existed within LASU, the institution must ensure that those responsible are identified, prosecuted, and punished accordingly.
For now, the professors are back, but the questions remain. How will LASU regain public trust after this controversy? Only time will tell.

Tragedy in Asaba: Young Singer Tortured to Death in Police Custody—When Will the Madness Stop?
The Nigerian music industry has lost yet another young talent, but not to an illness or accident—24-year-old upcoming singer, Paul Obukowho, reportedly died after being brutally tortured in police custody. His crime? Simply asking about the wrongful arrest of his friend.
This shocking incident, which occurred at the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) unit of the Delta State Police Command, Asaba, is yet another grim reminder of the unchecked brutality within Nigeria’s security forces. And honestly, when will this madness stop?!
—
From Inquiry to Tragedy: The Untold Story of Paul Obukowho
It all started on Wednesday morning when Prosper Odili was picked up by RRS operatives along Redeemed Road, Okpanam, Oshimili North LGA. Officers searched his house, found nothing incriminating, yet detained him anyway—because, why not?
That same evening, Paul, showing the kind of loyalty we all wish for in a friend, went to the police station to ask about Prosper’s arrest and possibly secure his bail. That was his mistake. Instead of getting answers, he was met with handcuffs, extreme torture, and eventual death.
Yes, you read that right.
The young singer was thrown into a cell, shackled on both hands and legs, and subjected to severe beatings. By Thursday night, he collapsed in the cell, his body unable to withstand the brutality disguised as law enforcement.
Rushed to the police clinic, then to Specialist Hospital Asaba, and finally to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Paul tragically lost his life at 4:00 am on Saturday.
And just when you think the story can’t get any worse—the officers who brought him to the hospital FLED the scene after he died. FLED! Like thieves in the night, as if their conscience finally caught up with them.
—
Another Day, Another Extrajudicial Killing—When Will Nigeria Learn?
This isn’t the first, second, or even third time extrajudicial killings and police brutality have made the headlines in Nigeria.
We’ve seen cases where FIFA has stricter rules on handballs than Nigeria has on police misconduct. And just like before, we fear this case might disappear into thin air, buried under official denials, meaningless press statements, and, of course, silence.
But let’s be clear—Paul Obukowho didn’t die; he was murdered. By the very people meant to protect him.
—
Justice Must Be Served—Or Are We Just Moving On Again?
As we speak, Paul’s lifeless body still lies at FMC Asaba, while his family, friends, and fellow Nigerians cry out for justice. Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, is yet to release an official statement.
Silence. That’s all we get when the people we pay to protect us turn into our worst nightmares.
Will this case be swept under the rug like so many before it? Or will Paul Obukowho’s death finally be the turning point?
One thing is certain—Nigerians are watching. The music industry is watching. The world is watching.
If justice isn’t served, then we might as well remove “protection” from the Nigerian Police Force’s job description. Because at this rate, our security forces are doing more killing than the criminals they are supposed to fight.
—
Enough is Enough!
CityBuzz stands with Paul Obukowho’s family and all victims of police brutality. We demand:
An independent investigation into his death.
The immediate prosecution of the officers involved.
Urgent police reforms to stop this madness once and for all.
Justice for Paul is justice for every Nigerian who has lost someone to the brutality of a system that seems more invested in oppression than protection.
Paul was only 24. He had dreams. He had talent. He had a future. And now, he is gone.
The question is—will Nigeria finally wake up, or will we just move on?

Ned Nwoko & Regina Daniels: Six Years, Six Wives & One Epic Love Poem!
Ah, love in the Nwoko household is sweeter than honey and agege bread! Nigerian senator and businessman Ned Nwoko is back with another headline-worthy romance moment—this time, celebrating six years of marriage with his sixth wife, Nollywood star Regina Daniels. And how did he mark the occasion? With a Shakespearean-level love poem on Instagram!
The poem, titled “Six Years Later…: She Still Can’t Resist Me,” came with a cozy couple picture and enough romantic lines to make even the hardest hearts blush.
“Six years and counting, and what do they see? A love untamed, wild, and free. Regina, my fire, my sweetest delight, Through every storm, you’ve held me tight,” Nwoko penned.
E choke!
But wait—there’s more! Uncle Ned, feeling extra romantic, decided to shoot his shot again. According to him, he randomly texted Regina: “Will you marry me?”
And her response? “Hahahahaha! Always! The biggest YES!”
Awww! Who says romance is dead?
Of course, no Ned Nwoko love story is complete without addressing haterzzz. The senator shut down critics with another poetic line:
“They whisper of love in measured tones, as if hearts are caged, made of stone. But ours, Regina, is fierce and wild, a dance of fire, God’s own child.”
Omo, na lyrical senator be this o! What do you think, fam? Is this the real definition of forever love or just premium billionaire goals?
Wahala for who no sabi Mercy Aigbe o! Because this woman has zero chills for haters!
Mercy Aigbe’s Clapback: “If You’re Not at the Top, You Won’t Be a Topic!”
Nollywood’s very own drama queen (on-screen, of course), Mercy Aigbe Adeoti, has once again set tongues wagging! This time, it’s not about her stunning Aso Ebi styles or her movie magic, but her marriage wahala and the never-ending chatter surrounding it.
During an interview on Bimpe Akintunde’s talk show Iriri Mi, Mercy Aigbe gave critics a reality check with a clapback hotter than fresh jollof rice! She didn’t hold back as she dismissed all the negative comments about her marriage to Kazim Adeoti, a father of four, calling them mere noise.
“That’s just noise. Look closely at those talking—how is their life?” she fired back, leaving the streets shaking. According to Mercy, if you’re not doing well, nobody talks about you. In her words, “If you’re not at the top, you won’t be a topic.” Omo! Shots fired!
Mercy, who is a proud mother of two, also got real about her journey, admitting that she never imagined her life would turn out the way it has. She spilled some tea about how her family initially disapproved of her remarriage, especially because of her age. Omo, see family intervention!
But did she listen? Of course not! The actress stood her ground, emphasizing that she knew exactly what she wanted. “I love love. Some family members asked me, ‘You’re close to 50, what are you looking for?’ But I believe everyone knows what they want. I saw what I wanted. I love to have a crown (husband) on my head and be married,” she stated.
Wait, wait—did she just say that without this marriage, she wouldn’t be the Mercy Aigbe we know today? Aunty, spill that tea well! What do you think, fam? Is Mercy serving wisdom or just premium Nollywood drama?
Drop your thoughts in the comments! And don’t forget—if you’re not at the top, you won’t be a topic! Mic drop!
Analyzing the Politics of Rivers State: Amaechi’s Claims and Their Wider Implications
In a recent interview with DW Africa, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi asserted that the dispute between the suspended governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, centers on money sharing. According to Amaechi, the feud has escalated beyond typical political disagreements and has contributed to significant instability in Rivers State—a situation that, in his view, culminated in President Bola Tinubu’s controversial decision to impose emergency rule. This blog post examines Amaechi’s claims and explores the potential downsides for Rivers State politics, the broader Nigerian political landscape, Tinubu’s administration, and the overall outlook of the process.
—
The Crux of the Feud: Money Sharing or Political Rivalry?
Amaechi’s claim that the dispute is fundamentally about sharing money challenges the public narrative. Instead of being a clash solely over policy or leadership direction, the feud appears to be intertwined with financial interests and resource allocation. Such assertions imply that corruption and financial mismanagement could be key drivers of political instability in the region. The focus on monetary disputes diverts attention from democratic processes and shifts the political discourse toward questions of accountability and transparency.
—
Potential Downsides for Rivers State Politics
1. Erosion of Democratic Norms: The emergency rule and suspension of Governor Fubara raise serious questions about democratic governance in Rivers State. When constitutional processes are bypassed in favor of executive intervention, it undermines public trust in political institutions and could set a dangerous precedent for future political crises.
2. Internal Party Fractures: A feud predicated on financial disagreements can lead to deep divisions within political parties. Such fragmentation may weaken party cohesion and hinder effective governance, ultimately affecting policy implementation and state development projects.
3. Uncertainty and Instability: The prolonged focus on internal disputes, as highlighted by Amaechi, contributes to an atmosphere of uncertainty. This instability could deter investment, hamper economic growth, and negatively impact the livelihoods of the people in the state.
—
Broader Implications for Nigerian Politics
1. Nationwide Democratic Backsliding: If the crisis in Rivers State is seen as part of a broader trend of executive overreach and disregard for constitutional procedures, it could signal a worrying shift in Nigerian politics. Such moves may encourage similar actions in other states, leading to a gradual erosion of federalism and the rule of law across the country.
2. Perceptions of Corruption: By framing the conflict as a battle over money, Amaechi indirectly reinforces concerns about corruption at high levels of government. This perception can have long-lasting effects on public trust in political leaders and institutions, which is critical for national cohesion and progress.
3. Electoral Disruption: The unrest and division caused by internal financial disputes and emergency measures might lead to irregularities in the electoral process. With elections being a cornerstone of democracy, any disruption in their fairness or transparency could have ripple effects on national politics and governance.
—
Tinubu’s Administration: Balancing Security and Constitutional Legitimacy
1. Executive Overreach and Constitutional Crisis: Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Fubara and impose emergency rule has been criticized as unconstitutional. This move, according to Amaechi, not only disrupts democratic processes in Rivers State but also reflects a broader strategy to consolidate power ahead of the 2027 general election. Such actions may damage the credibility of Tinubu’s administration if perceived as politically motivated.
2. Precedent for Future Governance: The use of emergency rule in a politically volatile state sets a precedent that could be exploited in future political contests. It raises the question of whether similar measures might be employed in other states, thereby eroding the constitutional safeguards that protect regional autonomy and democratic processes.
3. Public Backlash and Resistance: The call for public resistance by Amaechi highlights a potential for mass mobilization against what many may view as authoritarian practices. This grassroots pushback could lead to prolonged protests, further destabilizing the political environment and complicating Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to maintain order.
—
Outlook and Process Moving Forward
The current crisis in Rivers State, as dissected by Amaechi’s comments, reflects deeper structural issues within Nigerian politics. The emphasis on financial interests over transparent governance, coupled with executive actions that appear to sideline constitutional norms, paints a concerning picture for the future:
Need for Dialogue and Transparency: Resolving such disputes requires open channels of communication among political stakeholders. A public dialogue on financial accountability and equitable resource sharing could pave the way for more sustainable political solutions.
Institutional Reforms: There is an urgent need to reinforce constitutional safeguards that prevent unilateral decisions affecting state governance. Strengthening legal frameworks and ensuring the independence of judicial bodies might mitigate similar crises in the future.
Vigilance by Civil Society: As Rivers State grapples with these challenges, civil society and the general public must remain vigilant. Demanding accountability, questioning the legality of emergency measures, and advocating for democratic processes will be crucial in shaping a stable political future.
In summary, while Amaechi’s claims about money sharing may cast a harsh light on the internal dynamics of Rivers State politics, they also serve as a broader critique of the current state of governance in Nigeria. The potential downsides span local, national, and administrative spheres, underscoring the need for a balanced approach that upholds constitutional principles while addressing underlying issues of corruption and resource allocation. The path forward lies in transparent dialogue, robust institutional reforms, and active civic engagement to restore faith in democratic governance.

South Africa’s Ineligible Player Controversy: Will FIFA Enforce Its Own Rules?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers have taken a dramatic twist following revelations that South Africa fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in their Matchday 5 clash against Lesotho. Despite Lesotho withdrawing their official protest, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee still has the authority to act on its own. This situation raises critical questions about football governance, COSAFA politics, and FIFA’s consistency in enforcing its rules.
FIFA’s Rule on Fielding an Ineligible Player
FIFA’s regulations regarding ineligible players are clear. Article 8 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code states that sanctions can be applied even without an official protest. The rule is self-enforcing, meaning that if a team breaches eligibility regulations, FIFA has the power to act on its own, whether or not the affected team files a complaint.
The relevant part of the rule states:
“If a protest doesn’t follow the rules, it will be ignored. However, FIFA Disciplinary Committee can still investigate and punish a wrongdoing on its own, even if no official protest was made.”
This means South Africa’s breach is a matter of fact, not debate. If Mokoena was indeed suspended, as records suggest, FIFA should apply the standard punishment: a 3-0 forfeit loss and a three-point deduction.
Precedents: Has FIFA Always Applied the Rule?
Nigeria is no stranger to this kind of ruling. During the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria fielded Abdullahi Shehu, who was suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards. Even though Nigeria had already secured qualification, FIFA stripped them of three points and awarded Algeria a 3-0 victory.
The key question: Was there a formal protest in that case?
No. FIFA enforced the rule on its own. This is why the current scenario with South Africa should not require a protest from Lesotho to trigger disciplinary action. FIFA must maintain consistency and enforce its regulations regardless of external pressures.
Other notable examples include:
2014 World Cup qualifiers – Cape Verde was docked three points for fielding an ineligible player against Tunisia.
2018 World Cup qualifiers – Bolivia forfeited two matches for fielding an ineligible player against Peru and Chile.
In both cases, FIFA applied its rules strictly. Why should South Africa’s case be different?
COSAFA Politics: Is Lesotho Protecting South Africa?
Lesotho initially raised the alarm but later withdrew their protest, citing a “time bar” issue. However, many observers believe COSAFA politics played a role.
Both South Africa and Lesotho are members of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), a regional body that has historically protected its own. South Africa, being the economic and football powerhouse of the region, holds significant influence. This raises concerns that Lesotho officials may have backed down due to political pressure rather than a genuine legal barrier.
If FIFA allows COSAFA politics to override its regulations, it sets a dangerous precedent where regional influence can override global football laws.
It is however important to start here that, the secretary general of Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) Mokhosi Mohapi says they are hopeful that FIFA will stick by it rules and deduct points from South Africa for fielding an ineligible player.
Lesotho were beaten 2-0 by South Africa who fielded an ineligible player in Teboho Mokoena, who was supposed to be suspended for the game after picking up two yellow cards in previous games.
Reports were rife in South Africa about Lesotho not pursuing an appeal due to the fact that they have lost time to make, because such appeal must be made within a stipulated time as stated by FIFA.
Mohapi rubbished the claims saying FIFA should protect the integrity of the game by living to their rules, and deduct points from South Africa like they have done in previous similar cases.
“First of all, you should understand that the Lesotho Football Association is a member of Fifa, who is in good standing, and therefore we are obligated to protect the integrity of sports,” Mohapi said in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
“We are also obligated to assist Fifa in protecting the integrity of the game. Now, we are merely saying to Fifa, ‘Live and die by your regulations’. If you have precedence where you have deducted points before on matters that are very similar to the subject today, do so. So then we know your notion of fair play is applied irrespective of who is the perpetrator in this instance.
But we are merely helping Fifa as a bona fide member in good standing that lives and dies by your regulations. Be seen to apply the notion of fair play consistently.
He went further to also say they are not being influenced by Nigeria to pursue a case, rather they are only seeking for justice which they believe FIFA will grant.
“I must be honest with you (in regard to whether there are talks with the Nigeria Football Federation joining as an interested party). If I were to talk with the Nigerian Football Federation, I would talk with Dr. (Mohammed) Sanusi, who is the secretary-general. I have not spoken to him ever since in Egypt,” Mohapi clarified.
“If Fifa finds that they have instances before, deducted points, and allocated somewhere, I just say they must do it now without looking at technicalities,” he added.
The Nigerian Factor: Should the Super Eagles Push for Justice?
With Nigeria in the same qualification group as South Africa, the Super Eagles’ officials are reportedly pushing for FIFA to enforce its rules. If South Africa loses three points, it could significantly impact the standings and Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
However, this should not be about national interests alone. This is about fairness and the integrity of the game. If FIFA fails to act, it risks undermining its credibility and creating room for further rule violations.
Final Thoughts: FIFA Must Play by the Rules
South Africa’s fielding of an ineligible player is a clear-cut violation of FIFA’s regulations. The precedent is there—teams have lost points and games for similar breaches in the past, even without a protest.
This case is not just about South Africa or Lesotho; it is about FIFA’s responsibility to uphold its own rules. If the governing body fails to act, it sends a message that some teams are above the law.
Will FIFA enforce its own rules, or will COSAFA politics win the day? The football world is watching.
Egypt Takes the Stage! Pharaohs to Host 2025 U-20 AFCON After Côte d’Ivoire Withdrawal
The battle for Africa’s next generation of football superstars is heading to the land of the Pharaohs! Egypt has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2025 CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (U-20 AFCON) after Côte d’Ivoire pulled out due to unforeseen circumstances.
Teboho Mokoena: Will Bafana Get the Red Card? How FIFA’s Ineligible Player Saga Will Shake Up Group C
FIFA’s impending decision on South Africa’s potential breach of player eligibility rules could significantly alter the dynamics of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Should FIFA enforce its regulations consistently, as it has in past instances, the repercussions for Bafana Bafana and the group’s standings could be profound.
Victor Osimhen: The Striker Poised to Break Rashidi Yekini’s Goal-Scoring Record
The Nigerian football landscape is witnessing history in the making as Victor Osimhen closes in on the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles goal record. The 25-year-old Napoli striker recently surpassed Segun Odegbami’s long-standing tally to become Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer with 25 goals for the national team.
This milestone has sparked fresh discussions about whether Osimhen can finally break Yekini’s record of 37 goals—a feat that has remained untouched since 1998. The Super Eagles have produced several prolific strikers over the years, yet none have been able to dethrone Yekini. Could Osimhen be the one to do it?
Osimhen’s Rise to Nigeria’s Elite Goal-Scoring Club
Osimhen’s journey to Nigeria’s goal-scoring elite has been nothing short of remarkable. His combination of pace, power, and lethal finishing has made him one of the most feared strikers in world football today. He has consistently delivered for the Super Eagles in AFCON tournaments, World Cup qualifiers, and international friendlies.
His brace against Rwanda in the recent 2026 World Cup qualifier took his international goal tally to 25, placing him ahead of Odegbami (23 goals) and firmly in pursuit of Yekini’s 37-goal record.
How Many More Goals Does Osimhen Need?
Osimhen is just 12 goals away from equaling Yekini’s record and 13 goals away from setting a new all-time high. Given his current form and age, achieving this within the next two years is very realistic.
Why Have Other Nigerian Strikers Fallen Short?
Over the years, several Nigerian strikers have come close but failed to match Yekini’s legendary goal haul. Here’s a look at some of them:
1. Obafemi Martins (18 Goals, 2004–2015)
Nicknamed “Obagoal”, Martins was known for his blistering pace and powerful shots. However, despite his long Super Eagles career, he never hit the goal-scoring heights expected of him.
2. Yakubu Aiyegbeni (21 Goals, 2000–2012)
Yakubu was a natural goal scorer at club level but was often inconsistent in national colors. His infamous miss against South Korea at the 2010 FIFA World Cup overshadowed his contributions.
3. Odion Ighalo (16 Goals, 2015–2021)
Ighalo had a strong finish to his Super Eagles career, especially as AFCON 2019 top scorer. However, he started late and retired prematurely from international duty.
4. Emmanuel Emenike (9 Goals, 2011–2015)
Emenike was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON victory, but his national career was short-lived, preventing him from reaching greater goal-scoring heights.
What Makes Osimhen Different?
Unlike his predecessors, Osimhen ticks all the right boxes to become Nigeria’s all-time top scorer:
✅ Consistency – He has maintained a high goal-per-game ratio since debuting for the Super Eagles. ✅ Durability – Unlike past strikers who retired early, Osimhen is still in his prime and has years ahead. ✅ Versatility – He can score with both feet, his head, and from different positions in the attack. ✅ Work Ethic – His hunger and determination to improve set him apart.
If he continues at his current rate, Osimhen could surpass Yekini’s record by 2026, possibly during the FIFA World Cup or the next AFCON.
S,uc bc,u are uWho Can Challenge Osimhen for the Goal-Scoring Throne?
While Osimhen is Nigeria’s undisputed number one striker, a few young forwards could challenge him in the long run.
1. Gift Orban (KAA Gent, Belgium)
A clinical finisher with an eye for goal, Orban could be a long-term rival for Osimhen in the national team.
2. Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany)
Boniface has been in red-hot form in Europe and could become a top goal scorer if he gets regular Super Eagles opportunities.
3. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta, Italy)
Though more of a winger, Lookman has a knack for scoring crucial goals and could contribute significantly to Nigeria’s future goal-scoring tally.
4. Sadiq Umar (Real Sociedad, Spain)
Sadiq has a similar playing style to Osimhen and could become a reliable backup or even a competitor.
Final Verdict: Will Osimhen Break Yekini’s Record?
All signs point to YES. With just 12 more goals to equal Yekini and 13 to break the record, Osimhen is well on track to rewrite Nigerian football history.
If he stays injury-free and continues playing regularly for the Super Eagles, there is no reason why he won’t set a new benchmark for Nigerian goal scorers.
The question now is: Can Osimhen not only break Yekini’s record but push it beyond reach for future generations?
Only time will tell—but one thing is certain: Super Eagles fans are witnessing a once-in-a-generation striker who is making history with every goal he scores.
South Africa Faces Three-Point Deduction Over Ineligible Player in World Cup Qualifier
South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign has hit a potential roadblock as they risk losing three crucial points for fielding an ineligible player in their recent qualifier against Lesotho.
Another Nigerian Dies in South African Police Custody: How Long Will This Injustice Continue?
The Nigerian community in South Africa has been thrown into mourning yet again following the tragic death of 40-year-old Benjamin Okoli while in police custody.
His death, which comes barely a month after another Nigerian, 50-year-old Jeremiah Okoye, also died in similar circumstances, has raised serious concerns over the continued dehumanization and brutality faced by Nigerians in South Africa.
A Pattern of Brutality and Negligence
According to Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, President-General of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA), Okoli’s tragic fate was avoidable. Reports indicate that he was stopped and searched by South African police officers, who then took him home for further inspection. Despite finding nothing incriminating, the officers allegedly tortured, beat, and brutalized him.
> “Okoli couldn’t withstand the assault and fell into a coma. His brother’s attempts to revive him failed while the police stood by and watched as his life slipped away. Paramedics later pronounced him dead,” Onyekwelu revealed.
Even more disturbing is the fact that the same police unit accused of killing Okoye in January is allegedly responsible for Okoli’s death. This raises a fundamental question: Is there a targeted campaign against Nigerians in South Africa?
South African Authorities Have Turned a Blind Eye
The repeated deaths of Nigerians in police custody point to a culture of impunity within the South African law enforcement system. Over the years, Nigerians have been unjustly profiled, harassed, and sometimes killed by South African police officers under questionable circumstances.
Despite consistent complaints from NICASA and other advocacy groups, South African authorities have largely failed to act decisively. Investigations are either delayed or inconclusive, and justice remains elusive for the victims. This lack of accountability emboldens rogue officers who continue to violate Nigerians’ fundamental human rights with impunity.
The Nigerian Government Must Rise to the Challenge
The Nigerian government cannot afford to remain passive while its citizens face persecution abroad. It is not enough to issue diplomatic statements after each tragedy; there must be proactive engagement with the South African government to ensure justice and prevent further loss of Nigerian lives.
Urgent Steps Nigeria Must Take:
1. Demand an Independent Investigation – The Nigerian government should pressure the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to launch a transparent probe into these deaths and ensure that the officers responsible are held accountable.
2. Strengthen Diplomatic Engagement – The Nigerian Missions in Pretoria and Johannesburg must intensify high-level diplomatic discussions with the South African government to end these unwarranted attacks.
3. Legal Support for Nigerians – The government should provide free legal representation for Nigerians facing unlawful arrests or police brutality in South Africa.
4. Expose and Publicize Rights Violations – International bodies, such as the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and African Union (AU), should be petitioned to take action against human rights abuses.
5. Engage the South African Business Community – Economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa remain strong, with major South African companies like MTN, Shoprite, and MultiChoice benefiting from Nigeria’s market. The Nigerian government must use these business interests as leverage to ensure the safety of its citizens in South Africa.
A Call for Justice and Reform
The deaths of Benjamin Okoli and Jeremiah Okoye must not be swept under the rug. The Nigerian government owes it to its citizens abroad to defend their rights, ensure justice, and prevent further killings.
NICASA has called for calm, urging Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding as efforts are made to address the issue. However, it is clear that without strong action from the Nigerian government, these tragic incidents may continue unchecked.
Final Thoughts
The time for mere condemnation and press releases is over. Nigerians abroad deserve the same protection and dignity that other foreign nationals enjoy. South Africa must be held accountable, and Nigeria must show strength in defending its people.
Justice for Okoli. Justice for Okoye. Justice for every Nigerian who has suffered brutality abroad.

Human Rights: IGP Warns Police Officers Against Unlawful Detentions
In a strong push for police reform and accountability, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has issued a stern warning to all members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) regarding unlawful and prolonged detentions.
The IGP emphasized that detaining suspects beyond the legally stipulated period is not only a violation of their fundamental rights but also a threat to public trust in law enforcement.
Upholding Human Rights in Policing
The IGP’s directive highlights the constitutional rights to dignity and personal liberty, as stated in Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. These sections protect citizens from unlawful detention and ensure that every individual is treated with fairness and respect.
According to the IGP, the police must prioritize human rights while carrying out their duties. He warned that any officer who engages in excessive or unauthorized detentions will face serious disciplinary consequences.
Rebuilding Trust Between Police and Citizens
The Nigeria Police Force aims to foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and transparency in its operations. The IGP stressed that unlawful detentions undermine the integrity of the force and weaken public confidence in law enforcement. He urged officers to adhere strictly to the law and ensure that all arrests and detentions comply with due process.
By enforcing these human rights policies, the police hope to build stronger relationships with the communities they serve. This move aligns with the broader vision of a more effective, rights-focused, and people-friendly police force.
What to Do If Your Rights Are Violated
Citizens who experience or witness cases of unlawful detention can report them to the appropriate authorities:
For emergencies or to report suspicious activities, use the NPF Rescue Me App or call the toll-free emergency line: 08031230631.
Final Thoughts
The IGP’s directive is a major step towards protecting human rights and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force operates within the law. As citizens, we must also play our part by staying informed and reporting any abuse of power. A safer society is built on mutual trust and respect between law enforcement and the people.
The Implications of Nigeria’s Latest Petrol Import Surge on the Petroleum Industry, Consumers, and the Economy
The recent report by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) indicating that petroleum marketers and retailers imported 154.22 million litres of petrol between March 17 and 23, 2025, raises critical concerns about Nigeria’s energy security, the role of the Dangote Refinery, and the broader economic implications.
At a time when Nigeria is striving for fuel self-sufficiency, the heavy reliance on imports, despite Dangote Refinery’s operational status, sparks questions about pricing, supply dynamics, and economic policies. Let’s delve into the key takeaways and their implications for Nigeria’s petroleum sector, consumers, and the economy.
1. The Petroleum Industry: Dangote Refinery and the Import Surge
The Dangote Refinery, a 650,000 barrels per day facility, was expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel. However, this latest wave of importation shows that local production is yet to meet demand. A few key factors could be responsible:
Price Disparity: The ex-depot price of Dangote Refinery’s petrol currently stands at ₦815–₦825 per litre, while imported petrol’s landing cost ranges between ₦774–₦797 per litre. Marketers, driven by profit motives, will naturally opt for cheaper imports.
Dangote’s Forex Policy: The refinery’s suspension of Naira sales for petroleum products has further complicated the situation. Marketers and retailers may find importing in foreign currency more viable than dealing with Dangote Refinery in dollars.
Refinery Utilization: While Dangote Refinery is operational, its full-scale production capacity is not yet maximized. This, coupled with Nigeria’s other three refineries contributing less than 50% of the country’s daily demand, leaves a supply gap that imports are filling.
What This Means for the Petroleum Industry
1. Competition Between Dangote and Importers: Marketers now have the option of choosing between Dangote Refinery and imports, leading to price-based competition.
2. Forex Pressure: Increased imports mean higher foreign exchange demand, which could further pressure the Naira against the dollar.
3. NNPCL’s Reduced Monopoly: With marketers seeking alternatives, the NNPCL’s dominance in petrol supply is gradually weakening.
2. The Consumers: What’s in It for Nigerians?
For the average Nigerian, fuel price stability and availability are top priorities. However, this import surge presents mixed implications:
Potential Benefits
✅ More Supply, Less Scarcity: With additional imports, petrol scarcity is less likely in the short term. ✅ Competitive Pricing: If importers can source cheaper fuel, it may force Dangote Refinery to review its pricing strategy, leading to possible price reductions.
Potential Downsides
❌ No Guaranteed Price Drop: While import prices seem lower than Dangote’s, marketers could still sell at a premium to maximize profits. ❌ Continued Forex Pressure: If importers rely heavily on dollars to source fuel, it could weaken the Naira, leading to higher inflation that affects fuel prices and general living costs. ❌ No End to Deregulated Price Volatility: Since the market is deregulated, prices will fluctuate based on global oil prices and exchange rates, making long-term affordability uncertain.
3. The Nigerian Economy: Winners and Losers
Who Stands to Benefit?
✔️ Petroleum Marketers & Retailers: The flexibility to source from different suppliers gives marketers more negotiating power and potentially higher profit margins. ✔️ Importing Companies & Shipping Agents: With Nigeria still relying on imports, businesses involved in maritime logistics, shipping, and storage stand to gain. ✔️ Foreign Refineries & Exporters: The failure to fully utilize local refining capacity benefits foreign refiners selling to Nigeria.
Who Faces Challenges?
❌ Naira Stability: The reliance on fuel imports puts pressure on foreign reserves, making currency depreciation a real concern. ❌ Government Revenue: If more fuel is imported instead of being refined locally, the government may lose expected revenue from domestic refining activities. ❌ Dangote Refinery: If marketers prefer cheaper imports, Dangote Refinery may struggle to achieve its expected market dominance, affecting its revenue model.
Final Thoughts: Where Does Nigeria Go from Here?
The return to significant petrol importation highlights a persistent structural challenge in Nigeria’s energy sector. While Dangote Refinery’s long-term impact remains promising, factors like pricing, forex policies, and infrastructure limitations must be addressed.
For Nigerians, short-term supply stability is a relief, but the long-term goal must be self-sufficiency in refining. The government, in collaboration with private stakeholders, needs to:
✅ Ensure price competitiveness between locally refined and imported fuel. ✅ Improve forex policies to reduce excessive reliance on the dollar for local transactions. ✅ Maximize local refining capacity to minimize unnecessary imports.
Ultimately, achieving fuel security requires a balanced mix of competitive pricing, regulatory efficiency, and investment in refining infrastructure. Otherwise, the cycle of dependence on imports will persist, keeping Nigeria at the mercy of foreign suppliers and fluctuating forex rates.

Political Turmoil in Rivers: Governor Fubara Reacts to Suspension and State of Emergency
Rivers State has been plunged into a fresh political crisis following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. The shocking development has sparked intense debate over the stability of governance in one of Nigeria’s most politically charged states.
Fubara’s Response: A Call for Calm Amidst Uncertainty
In a press statement addressed to the people of Rivers, Governor Fubara expressed deep concern over the situation but maintained his composure, urging citizens to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
“Since assuming office as your Governor, all my actions and decisions have been guided by my constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty,” Fubara stated, emphasizing that his administration has prioritized the security of lives and property while ensuring the continued progress of the state.
Despite the lingering political impasse, he noted that his government had remained committed to constitutional order, even complying with President Tinubu’s peace intervention and Supreme Court rulings to restore normalcy.
However, Fubara accused members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of persistently frustrating efforts towards peace and governance, stating that their actions have made genuine progress difficult.
The Power Struggle: Who Blinks First?
This crisis traces its roots to a prolonged political standoff between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Their rift has divided the state’s political landscape, fueling months of intense power struggles between the executive and legislative arms of the government.
Despite the challenges, Fubara reassured Rivers people that his administration had continued to function, paying salaries, executing projects, and maintaining peace in the state. His message to the people was clear: “Yes, we have political disagreements, but Rivers State remains safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch.”
What Next for Rivers State?
With the declaration of a state of emergency, the federal government now assumes direct control of Rivers State, raising serious concerns about the future of democratic governance in the state. Will Fubara challenge his suspension legally? Will this intervention restore peace or escalate tensions further?
For now, Governor Fubara has called on Rivers people to remain calm and resilient, assuring them that he will explore all democratic avenues to resolve the crisis.
“We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive,” he concluded.
As Nigeria watches closely, the coming days will determine whether Rivers State will witness a return to normalcy or sink deeper into political instability.

Kano Court Convicts Bulama Abdulrahman for ₦35m Fraud: A Blow to Fake Auctioneering
In a landmark decision by the Kano State High Court, Justice Nasiru Saminu has convicted Bulama Abdulrahman—a notorious fake auctioneer—for defrauding victims of a staggering ₦35 million. Abdulrahman, who posed as an EFCC-assigned auctioneer to sell properties forfeited to the Federal Government, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine. The ruling marks another significant step in the fight against fraud and fraudulent practices in Nigeria.
—
Unpacking the Charges and Testimonies
The case centered on two charges linked to intent to defraud and obtaining money under false pretenses. Key details include:
Fraudulent Transaction: On or about June 2023 in Kano, Abdulrahman allegedly defrauded Safiyanu Abdullahi of Tauraro and Property Limited by falsely claiming he had the EFCC’s consent to auction off a fenced, uncompleted building at Rijiyar Zaki.
Financial Misconduct: Investigations revealed that Abdulrahman misappropriated ₦20 million from the victim under this false pretense, among other dubious transactions that totaled ₦35 million.
Witness Testimony:
Mr. Ahmed Yero, a Chief Investigator with the NDLEA, testified that evidence from multiple bank accounts—allegedly controlled by Abdulrahman—clearly indicated fraudulent financial inflows.
Despite pleading not guilty, Abdulrahman’s lone testimony could not withstand the weight of evidence and corroborative witness accounts presented by prosecution counsel Musa Isah.
Abdulrahman’s defense argued for leniency, highlighting his status as a PhD student at Nasarawa State University. However, the court, convinced by the overwhelming evidence, convicted him on one count and acquitted him on the other, imposing a strict sentence and ordering him to pay restitution of ₦35 million to the victim. Failure to pay this restitution will result in an additional seven-year prison term.

The Broader Implications: Tracking and Bringing Fraudsters to Justice
The conviction of Bulama Abdulrahman is not just an isolated win against fraud; it also sets a precedent for how similar cases can—and should—be handled. In the ongoing fight against fraudulent activities, transparency and accountability are paramount. Here are some key measures and sources that can aid in tracking perpetrators of similar crimes:
1. Official Platforms and Websites
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC): The EFCC website (efcc.gov.ng) regularly updates its press releases and news on fraud-related cases. Monitoring this portal can provide timely insights and alerts on similar fraudulent activities.
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA): For cases involving financial misconduct linked to other crimes, the NDLEA’s updates and bulletins are invaluable in tracking evidence and prosecuting offenders.
2. Enhanced Surveillance and Digital Tools
Bank Verification Number (BVN) Tracking: Utilizing digital tools to trace bank accounts through BVN systems can help uncover discrepancies in financial transactions that point to fraudulent practices.
Bodycams and Digital Recording Devices: Encouraging law enforcement agencies to use bodycams during operations not only boosts transparency but also ensures that evidence is reliably recorded. Officers who neglect these protocols should face strict sanctions.
3. Public-Private Partnerships
Collaboration with Financial Institutions: Banks and financial institutions are pivotal in detecting unusual transaction patterns. Strengthening cooperation between these entities and law enforcement can lead to quicker identification of fraudulent schemes.
4. Public Awareness and Reporting Channels
Hotlines and Digital Reporting Platforms: Citizens should be encouraged to report suspicious activities through dedicated hotlines and secure online portals provided by agencies like the EFCC.
Community Outreach Programs: Regular orientation and awareness campaigns can empower the public with knowledge about fraud prevention and their rights, ensuring that similar cases are promptly reported and investigated.

A Step Forward in the Fight Against Fraud
The conviction of Bulama Abdulrahman sends a strong message to fraudsters: Nigerian courts and law enforcement agencies are committed to upholding justice. As the case underscores the need for transparent operations and stringent tracking of fraudulent activities, it is imperative for stakeholders—from government agencies to the public—to leverage modern digital tools and maintain vigilant oversight.
By utilizing official sources like the EFCC website, embracing advanced forensic and surveillance methods, and fostering public-private partnerships, Nigeria can better track, prosecute, and deter perpetrators of fraud. Ultimately, such measures not only safeguard the financial integrity of the nation but also restore public confidence in the justice system.

Abba Kyari’s Drug Case: A Test of Nigeria’s Justice System and the Need for Transparent Security Operations
The trial of Ex-Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari has once again highlighted concerns about corruption, accountability, and justice delays in Nigeria’s criminal justice system. The once-celebrated “super cop” now faces multiple charges, including money laundering, concealment of assets, and drug-related crimes. As the trial unfolds, the testimonies of witnesses and investigators have painted a troubling picture of financial irregularities, questionable transactions, and operational lapses within Nigeria’s security forces.
Key Witness Testimonies & Allegations Against Kyari
The prosecution, led by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has presented strong evidence suggesting that Kyari failed to declare significant assets and had suspicious financial inflows exceeding N200 million.
One of the key witnesses, Mr. Ahmed Yero, an investigator with NDLEA, detailed how:
Kyari claimed to have only three bank accounts, but investigations revealed he operated 10 active accounts under his Bank Verification Number (BVN).
These accounts included domiciliary accounts for Dollars, Euros, and Pounds Sterling, with large transactions beyond his legitimate police salary.
Over N200 million in unexplained funds flowed into his accounts over the years, including operational funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which were later transferred to family members and associates.
Despite claiming to be an agricultural entrepreneur, Kyari failed to provide any evidence of legitimate business operations.
His legal team, led by Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), challenged the admissibility of some financial documents but reserved arguments for later.
Another witness, a compliance officer from Sterling Bank, testified that bank statements and financial transactions linked to Kyari confirmed the NDLEA’s findings.
Beyond the money laundering charges, Kyari and four members of his team are also facing trial for allegedly tampering with cocaine they seized from two convicted drug traffickers at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
Delays in the Judicial Process: A Cause for Concern
While the trial is progressing, there is a growing concern over the slow pace of justice. Kyari was arrested in early 2022, and more than two years later, the trial is still ongoing, with adjournments pushing key proceedings further.
The elongated nature of this case reflects a broader issue in Nigeria’s justice system, where high-profile cases involving influential figures often drag on for years, sometimes decades.
Key challenges include:
1. Frequent adjournments that delay justice.
2. Legal technicalities that allow the defense to slow proceedings.
3. Bureaucratic inefficiencies in law enforcement investigations.
4. Lack of forensic and technological tools to expedite case resolution.
Ensuring Fair & Timely Justice: The Way Forward
To prevent such delays and ensure fair trials, Nigeria’s judiciary, law enforcement, and anti-corruption agencies must implement faster, more transparent, and technologically driven processes.
1. Mandatory Use of Bodycams for All Security Operatives
If officers involved in drug enforcement or financial crimes investigations wore bodycams, it would eliminate doubts about how cases were handled.
This would prevent tampering with evidence, as in the case where Kyari’s team allegedly manipulated seized cocaine.
Officers who fail to wear bodycams or deactivate them during operations should face strict disciplinary actions.
2. Strengthening Digital Forensics & Financial Tracking
The NDLEA’s ability to track Kyari’s financial transactions through BVN is commendable, but real-time financial surveillance should be a standard practice.
Automated alerts should be triggered whenever suspicious transactions occur in security officers’ accounts, preventing corruption before it escalates.
3. Special Courts for High-Profile Corruption & Drug Cases
Cases like Kyari’s should be assigned to special corruption and drug-related courts with strict timelines to avoid prolonged delays.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), NDLEA, and other agencies should work with the judiciary to create a framework that ensures cases are concluded within a fixed period (e.g., 12–18 months).
4. Transparent & Independent Oversight of Law Enforcement
An independent body should regularly audit the financial transactions of high-ranking officers to prevent cases like Kyari’s.
This body should have the power to investigate and prosecute without political interference.
5. International Collaboration for Law Enforcement Standards
Nigerian security agencies should adopt best practices from the FBI, INTERPOL, and other international crime agencies regarding evidence handling, financial audits, and case management.
This would help restore credibility to agencies like the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), which Kyari previously led.
A Defining Case for Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Fight
Abba Kyari’s case is one of the most high-profile corruption and drug-related cases in Nigeria’s history. How it is handled will set a precedent for future cases involving law enforcement officers.
If justice is delayed or manipulated, it will further erode public trust in the judiciary and law enforcement. However, if the case is concluded transparently and fairly, it will send a strong message that no one is above the law—not even a celebrated “super cop.”
As the trial resumes on March 24, Nigerians and the international community will be watching to see whether justice is truly served or whether this will become yet another case where powerful figures escape accountability.
Ladi Olubunmi’s Tragic Death in Kenya: A Wake-Up Call for Nigerian Authorities
The shocking and tragic death of Ladi Olubunmi, a Nigerian content moderator working in Kenya, has once again brought to light the vulnerabilities Nigerians face abroad. Olubunmi, who was employed by Teleperformance, a social media contracting firm in Nairobi, was found dead in her apartment three days after she had allegedly passed away, with no immediate explanation for her demise.
Her unexplained absence from work led to the discovery of her decomposing body, sparking outrage and urgent calls for investigation into the working conditions and treatment of Nigerians abroad.
Suspicious Circumstances & Calls for Investigation
Reports suggest that Olubunmi had previously sought permission to return to Nigeria multiple times but was allegedly denied by her employer. This has raised serious concerns about the rights of Nigerian workers abroad and whether they receive the necessary protection and mental health support in foreign workplaces.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Kenyan authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olubunmi’s death. In a statement issued by NiDCOM’s Media and Public Relations Unit, she emphasized the urgent need for proper labour laws to protect Nigerians working overseas.
> “Proper mobility of labour law in Nigeria would protect the rights and well-being of Nigerians employed abroad, ensuring proper documentation, monitoring, and support systems,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
A Recurring Tragedy for Nigerians in Kenya
Ladi Olubunmi’s case is not an isolated incident. In July 2021, two Nigerians died under mysterious circumstances at a house party in Kenya. One reportedly fell from the 7th floor of an apartment complex, while the other slumped in the kitchen and was later pronounced dead. The lack of clear explanations and transparent investigations into these cases has left many Nigerians wondering: How safe are our citizens abroad?
The pattern of unexplained deaths of Nigerians in Kenya raises serious questions about the security, treatment, and legal protection available to them in foreign lands.
What Can the Nigerian Government & Embassies Do?
Olubunmi’s tragic case should serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government and its embassies worldwide. It is no longer enough to react after the fact—proactive measures must be taken to prevent such occurrences.
Key Preventive Measures:
1. Stronger Labour & Mobility Laws
Establish clear policies for Nigerian citizens working abroad, ensuring proper contracts, working conditions, and legal rights.
Make it illegal for employers to deny Nigerian workers the right to return home.
2. Regular Embassy Checks on Nigerian Workers
Embassies should routinely monitor Nigerians working in high-risk countries to track their welfare and employment conditions.
Create a dedicated emergency support line for Nigerians facing workplace abuse, illegal detention, or mental health struggles abroad.
3. Massive Enlightenment Campaigns
Government agencies like NiDCOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Labour Unions should launch campaigns to educate Nigerians on:
Their rights abroad
Red flags to watch for when accepting foreign job offers
How to seek help if stranded or mistreated in another country
4. Stronger Bilateral Agreements for Nigerian Workers
Nigeria must demand accountability from foreign countries where its citizens work, ensuring protection from exploitation and abuse.
Negotiate workplace protections as part of employment agreements between Nigerian workers and foreign companies.
A Call for Justice & Lasting Change
Ladi Olubunmi’s death should not be just another statistic. Her family, friends, and the Nigerian community deserve answers. More importantly, Nigerian citizens—whether at home or abroad—deserve better protection, representation, and advocacy.
As we await a transparent investigation from the Kenyan authorities, the Nigerian government must take this case as an urgent reminder: It’s time to act, not react.
In what seems to be the latest verse in this legal gospel saga, an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court has turned up the volume on social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). The court has now issued a bench warrant for his arrest, adding a new layer of drama to his ongoing feud with gospel sensation Mercy Chinwo.
VDM’s No-Show: A Missed “Altar Call”
Presiding over the case on Thursday, March 14, Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana ordered the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement to arrest VDM and ensure he appears before
the court. This decision came after the activist was a no-show for his scheduled hearing, despite a summons issued on March 5.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, must have practiced the art of persuasion because he made a passionate plea to the court, asking for time to personally produce his client at the next sitting. Unfortunately, Magistrate Iyana was not in the mood for mercy (no pun intended) and declined to vacate the arrest order.
The Allegations: Defamation, Diversion & Dollar Drama
VDM is accused of making defamatory statements about Mercy Chinwo on social media. In particular, he alleged that she was entangled in a $345,000 contractual dispute with her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu (Eezee Tee). Chinwo, not one to let false accusations slide, hit back by presenting documentary evidence, emails, and payment receipts to clear her name.
Her legal team, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi, insists that VDM’s comments violate Sections 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.
The N1.1 Billion Gospel Hit – Still on the Charts
This latest development comes on the heels of the ₦1.1 billion lawsuit Mercy Chinwo previously filed against VDM at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. In that suit, she is demanding:
A public apology and retraction of the alleged defamatory statements.
The deletion of all social media posts related to the claims.
A financial atonement worth ₦1.1 billion—which, let’s be honest, could probably fund a whole new gospel album (or two).
What’s Next?
With an arrest warrant now in play, the stage is set for what could be a defining legal showdown. Will VDM surrender voluntarily, or will the police have to track him down? Either way, one thing is certain—this gospel legal battle is far from over.
Stay tuned for the next track in this unfolding drama. Will it be a redemption song or a legal remix? We’ll find out soon enough!
