Nigerian Labour Congress Decries N8 Billion Allocation for Electricity Bill Sensitization in 2025 Budget
Background and Allocation
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticised the allocation of N8 billion in the 2025 federal budget for a nationwide campaign to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of paying their electricity bills. Describing the allocation as “absurd,” the NLC called for urgent reforms in the power sector to address deep-rooted issues.
The Federal Ministry of Power proposed the N8 billion budget to educate Nigerians about the importance of timely payment of electricity bills. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed this initiative during his budget defence at the National Assembly. Adelabu emphasized that the campaign aims to tackle the persistent challenges of power theft, poor payment habits, and the need to protect national power assets.
Goals of the Campaign
According to Adelabu, the sensitization campaign will utilize various media platforms—social, digital, and print—to effectively reach Nigeria’s diverse population of over 200 million people. The minister stressed the need for a nationwide reorientation to change public perception and habits regarding the power sector. He pointed out that many Nigerians still fail to understand that electricity is not a free resource and that protecting the sector’s infrastructure is crucial for a stable power supply.
NLC’s Response
The NLC, however, vehemently opposed the proposed budget. In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the union criticized the Ministry of Power and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for their inefficiency and failure to find lasting solutions to the country’s power problems despite significant investments in the sector.
Ajaero’s statement, titled “Before The Collapse Of The Power Sector: N8 Billion Budget For Electricity Bill Sensitization And Matters Arising,” highlighted the endemic corruption within the power sector. He accused the sector’s leaders of gross incompetence and lamented the frequent power grid collapses due to greed and mismanagement.
The NLC called on the Ministry of Power and NERC to reinvigorate the power sector and prevent its imminent collapse. The union warned that the continued mismanagement and waste of public funds would further erode public confidence in government institutions and worsen the socio-economic conditions facing millions of Nigerians.
Ajaero emphasized, “We will not stand idly by while public funds are wasted in the name of governance. This is another glaring reminder of why Nigeria remains in its current state of economic stagnation and why incompetence continues to thrive unchecked.”
Conclusion
As the debate over the N8 billion budget allocation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the federal government will address the concerns raised by the NLC and other stakeholders. The effectiveness of the proposed sensitization campaign and the broader reforms in the power sector will be crucial in determining the future stability and efficiency of Nigeria’s electricity supply.

From being dismissed as a failure early in his career to becoming a household name, Lateef’s journey is a masterclass in resilience, grit, and the power of love.
“They Gave Me One Year to Fail—But I Proved Them Wrong”
In a jaw-dropping revelation, Lateef recounted how a senior colleague in the Yoruba movie industry doubted his potential.
“Someone told me they gave me one year to see what I would become,” he shared. But Lateef wasn’t deterred. Instead, he turned that criticism into fuel, boldly responding, “Give me two years, and you will see what I will become.”
Today, Lateef stands as one of Nollywood’s most versatile and bankable stars, proving that talent combined with determination can silence even the harshest critics.
Love Through the Storm: Bimpe, His Unshakable Rock

“Bimpe has been a rock for me,” Lateef said emotionally. “Recently, someone called her barren on social media. She would always show it to me and say, ‘They will be all right.’”
Her strength and unwavering support have not only helped him navigate the spotlight but also fortified their relationship.
The Challenge of Lisabi: A Test of Faith
Lateef revealed the harrowing challenges he faced during the production of his first major movie, Lisabi. With high hopes for support from colleagues, he was left disappointed when no one showed up to help.
“When I wanted to do my first big screen job, Lisabi, I realised everybody I thought would stand by me was not there,” he confessed.

Think Twice: The Hidden Dangers of Chasing Greener Pastures Abroad | From Sleeping With Men To Sleeping With Animals
For many, the dream of travelling abroad often comes wrapped in promises of prosperity and a better life. But behind those promises lies a world fraught with danger, deception, and unimaginable suffering—a reality that thousands have faced when seeking greener pastures in places like Libya.
For one young Nigerian woman, her quest for greener pastures in Europe through Libya turned into a horrifying ordeal that scarred her body and soul.
Her story is a stark reminder of the dangers of irregular migration and the deceptive promises made by traffickers.
A Journey of Desperation
“It all started with hope,” she began, her voice heavy with emotion. A graduate of economics from a Nigerian state university, she had expected a bright future after her NYSC. But years of joblessness, endless rejections, and an environment rife with exploitation left her desperate for a way out.
“When I heard about opportunities in Spain, I was ready. Being a maid there couldn’t be worse than my struggles here in Nigeria,” she said. Encouraged by a family member and introduced to a man named Charles, she gathered ₦300,000 for her journey. Little did she know that the path ahead would take her straight into the jaws of hell.
The Desert of Death
The journey to Libya was the first taste of the horrors to come. “From Kano to Agadez, I almost died in the desert,” she recalled, her eyes glazing over. “I saw human remains—people who didn’t make it. I thought the desert was hell, but I didn’t know the real hell awaited me in Libya.”
Upon arrival, her dreams were shattered. Charles had not arranged a job as a maid; instead, she was sold into sexual slavery. “The moment I stepped down from the lorry, I was taken to a house and told to remove my clothes. I couldn’t believe it. I was now someone’s ‘property.’”
Living in Hell
Her captors forced her and six other girls to work as prostitutes under inhumane conditions. “Sometimes, 20 or 25 men a day,” she said, her voice trembling. “I was bleeding every day. My body was torn apart, and there was no care, no mercy.”
The abuse was not limited to physical violence. “These men treated us like animals. They would slap us, pull our hair, and even urinate on us. There was no escape, no one to turn to.”
A Glimmer of Hope
After nearly two years of unimaginable suffering, her chance for freedom came when Nigerian officials arrived in Libya to help citizens return home. “The moment I heard about it, I ran. I didn’t care about anything else. I just wanted to come home,” she said, tears streaming down her face.
Lessons for Aspiring Migrants
Her story is a warning: not every opportunity abroad is genuine. Many young Nigerians fall victim to human traffickers who exploit their dreams of a better future. Irregular migration not only exposes individuals to physical danger but also places them at the mercy of unscrupulous individuals who see them as commodities.
Here are key takeaways for anyone considering such a journey:
Verify Opportunities: Do not rely on hearsay or unverified agents. Research and confirm the authenticity of job offers or migration processes.
Understand the Risks: Irregular migration often involves dangerous routes and inhumane treatment. Be aware of the realities before making a decision.
Seek Alternatives: Explore local opportunities for skill acquisition or government programs aimed at youth empowerment.
Report Traffickers: If you suspect someone is involved in human trafficking, report them to the authorities to prevent others from falling victim.
A Call to Action
This story is a wake-up call for individuals, families, and the government.
Desperation should not push anyone into the arms of traffickers. There is an urgent need for more awareness campaigns and job creation to curb the factors driving irregular migration.
While individuals have a responsibility to make informed decisions, the government and society also play crucial roles in addressing this issue.
Policies that create jobs, promote entrepreneurship, and raise awareness about human trafficking are essential to curbing irregular migration.
Non-governmental organizations and media platforms must continue to educate and advocate, ensuring that people are aware of the dangers before they set out on perilous journeys.
Hope for the Future
For this brave Libya returnee, the nightmare is over, but the scars remain. Her courage in sharing her story is a call for others to learn from her experience.
Let her words remind us all: the grass may seem greener on the other side, but sometimes, the price of chasing that dream is far too high.
Instead of risking everything for the unknown, let’s invest in building opportunities here at home. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for all Nigerians without the need for dangerous journeys abroad.
What steps do you think can be taken to curb irregular migration? Share your thoughts in the comments.

However, keeping tomato plants well-watered can be tricky—especially during hot weather. Too little water, and the plants wilt; too much water, and you risk root rot or fungal diseases.
