Ifagbenga Taiwo, A Trainee Herbalist Claims Spell Made Him Kill His One-Month-Old Son

In a tragic and shocking incident, the Ogun State Police Command has arrested a trainee herbalist, Ifagbenga Taiwo, for allegedly killing his 41-day-old son in Keesi, Adatan, Abeokuta.

The suspect claims he was under the influence of a spell when he committed the horrific act.

The incident reportedly occurred last Monday, when the baby’s mother, Raimat Wasilat, left her son on a bed while washing clothes outside their home. Upon returning, she discovered her son with his throat slit. Devastated, she raised the alarm, which drew the attention of neighbours and the police.

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, Wasilat accused her husband of being responsible for the act, leading to Taiwo’s arrest and subsequent investigation.

The Suspect’s Confession

In an interrogation video obtained by reporters, Taiwo narrated how he used a knife to kill his infant son. He claimed he was not in control of his actions, blaming his behaviour on a mysterious force.

Recounting the events in Yoruba (later translated), Taiwo explained that he had given his wife a feeding allowance before leaving for his apprenticeship that day. Realizing he had forgotten some charms he usually carried for protection, he decided to return home to retrieve them.

“After picking up the charms, I returned to work,” Taiwo stated. “But about an hour later, I felt a strange breeze and began feeling uneasy. It was like something was circulating in my body, urging me to commit a crime.”

How It Happened

Taiwo explained that upon returning home, he found his wife was no longer outside washing clothes. Overwhelmed by the strange feeling, he went inside, picked up a knife from his mother’s room, and approached his son.

“I picked up the knife and went to where my son was laid. That’s the last thing I remember before regaining consciousness and realizing what I had done,” he confessed. “When I saw my son’s lifeless body, I was in shock and fled through the back door of the house.”

Denies Intentions to Harm Wife

When asked if the killing was motivated by any intention to separate from his wife, Taiwo denied such claims. “I love my wife and had no plans to divorce her,” he said. “I don’t know how it happened. I acted before I realized what I had done.”

He expressed remorse for his actions and appealed to the government for mercy, stating, “I am sorry for what I did. I don’t know what came over me.”
