IGP Denies Involvement in Land Dispute as Police Warn Against False Claims
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has firmly dismissed recent allegations linking the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to a land dispute involving Ms. Bilikisu Ishaqu Aliyu and the Yesufu family.
In a press release issued on July 20, 2024, the Police described the claims as unfounded, misleading, and an attempt to tarnish the IGP’s reputation while creating unnecessary tension.
The allegations surfaced following a publication by AIT on July 10, 2024, titled ‘Yesufu Family Seeks Justice As Police Authorities Fail to Investigate Bilikisu Ishaqu’. The report suggested that the Police failed to handle the dispute fairly, portraying the Force as irresponsible and lawless.
Police Clarify Position on Civil Disputes
Addressing the controversy, the Police emphasized that the IGP and the Force have no jurisdiction over civil disputes unless there are criminal elements involved.
“The IGP shouldn’t be dragged into civil matters such as this land dispute. The Police’s role is to maintain law and order, not to settle civil cases,” the statement read.
The Force reiterated that disputes of this nature should follow proper legal procedures, and aggrieved parties must avoid resorting to media blackmail to force the hand of law enforcement agencies.
No Rift with EFCC
The Police also debunked rumours of a conflict between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the case.
Describing the claim as laughable and baseless, the Force stated that both agencies maintain a cooperative and professional relationship.
“There is no conflict between the Police and the EFCC regarding this case or any other matter,” the statement stressed.

Call for Proper Channels and Procedures
The Police urged all parties involved in the dispute to follow due process if they require intervention, rather than engaging in sensational media tactics aimed at undermining the Police Force.
“We remain committed to addressing legitimate concerns and maintaining peace, but parties must approach the Force through proper channels,” the statement added.
The Police further reassured Nigerians of their commitment to public safety, justice, and national unity.
Public Urged to Disregard Misinformation
The NPF concluded by calling on the public to ignore misleading reports and continue to trust the Police to handle matters that could threaten peace and security.
“We urge Nigerians to disregard these unfounded claims. The Police Force remains focused on promoting peace, unity, and progress,” the statement emphasized.
Final Note
As tensions over the land dispute persist, the Police have advised the concerned parties to seek redress through legal and formal channels while maintaining law and order.
