Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps Clears Illegal Structures Under Eko Bridge

The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has recently taken decisive action to clear illegal structures under Eko Bridge at Elegbata, on Lagos Island. This operation resulted in the displacement of occupants from 84 rooms that had been constructed without authorization.

Operation Overview

According to a statement released by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Lukman Ajayi, Corps Marshal Retired Major Olanini Cole led the operation. One individual was arrested during the raid for allegedly constructing an eight-room toilet and channelling its waste directly into the Lagoon.

Incident and Response

The operation was initiated following an attack on a member of the public at the location. In response to a petition regarding the attack, the state Commissioner for Environment ordered the demolition of the illegal structures. It was revealed that some of the evicted residents had been living in the area for up to 30 years.

Public Health Concerns

Cole highlighted significant public health risks associated with the illegal settlement. “Eight toilet pipes were found to be linked to the Lagoon, near a fishing area. Some occupants were preparing food for public consumption under these conditions, posing severe health hazards,” Cole explained. The operator of the makeshift toilet facility was detained during the operation.

Reasons for Illegal Settlements

Many of the displaced individuals claimed they resorted to living under the bridge due to financial constraints, making it impossible for them to afford proper housing.

Future Actions

Cole emphasized that the operation would not be an isolated event, stating that similar efforts would continue across the state to remove illegal occupants from known black spots.

This initiative underscores the commitment of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps to ensuring public safety and maintaining environmental health standards.
