Manchester City vs Everton: Guardiola Faces Pressure Ahead of Boxing Day Clash
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has raised alarm bells about his team’s precarious position ahead of their Boxing Day Premier League showdown with Everton.
With the defending champions currently languishing in seventh place, Guardiola admitted fears of missing out on Champions League qualification—a scenario that could have serious financial and sporting consequences for the club.
City’s Slump Sparks Concerns
Speaking to the media, Guardiola acknowledged City’s struggles, pointing to their disappointing run of just one win in the last 12 matches. He warned that failure to secure a top-four finish would be a huge blow to the club’s reputation and finances.
“Financial is an issue, of course it is,” Guardiola admitted. “But it’s not just that. Now we’re at risk, of course we are, definitely.”
City currently trail fourth-placed Nottingham Forest by four points, and with competition for European spots fiercer than ever, Guardiola stressed the need for urgent improvement.
“If we don’t qualify [for the Champions League], it is because we don’t deserve it,” he said, adding that their recent struggles reflect deeper problems within the squad.
Support from City’s Hierarchy
Despite the pressure, Guardiola revealed he still has the backing of City’s leadership, including chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak and sporting director Txiki Begiristain.
“Every week we talk. I feel incredibly supported,” Guardiola noted, while emphasizing that solutions need to be found quickly.

City may also pin their hopes on UEFA’s new allocation system, which offers an extra Champions League spot to top-performing leagues this season. But Guardiola is not leaving anything to chance, highlighting the importance of fixing their issues on the pitch.
Boxing Day Battle Against Everton
As City prepare to host Everton, the match represents a must-win scenario to revive their campaign. Everton, who are fighting to climb out of the relegation zone, will likely pose a tough challenge despite their struggles this season.
For Guardiola and his men, Boxing Day could prove to be a turning point—or deepen the crisis further. With the Premier League title race slipping away, City must refocus their efforts to secure European qualification and avoid what would be their worst finish in over a decade.
Kickoff at the Etihad Stadium promises high stakes and high drama as both teams battle for crucial points to keep their respective ambitions alive.
