NAFDAC Refutes Claims of Destroying Bags of Sachet Water in Lagos

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has denied allegations linking its officials to a viral video depicting the destruction of sachet water in Lagos.

The video, which sparked widespread reactions on social media, shows several individuals unloading and destroying bags of sachet water from a truck.

Lagos State Government Points Fingers at NAFDAC

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, initially attributed the incident to NAFDAC. In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Wahab clarified that the Lagos State Government was not involved in the operation.

“Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the individuals in question are enforcement officers from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC),” Wahab stated. He further explained that the action was part of an ongoing enforcement exercise targeting sachet water products that failed to meet NAFDAC’s regulatory standards.

NAFDAC Responds: “Not Our Officials”

In a swift rebuttal, NAFDAC distanced itself from the individuals seen in the video, asserting that they were neither its officials nor members of its Investigation and Enforcement team.

“The videos circulating of individuals engaging in enforcement activities are NOT NAFDAC officials or part of our Investigation and Enforcement team,” the agency declared in an official statement.

NAFDAC emphasized that its enforcement operations adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and professional guidelines. The agency noted that stopping vehicles and destroying products on the spot is neither an approved method nor a practice recognized by NAFDAC.

Commitment to Proper Enforcement Procedures

NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety through proper enforcement of food and drug regulations. The agency reassured Nigerians that it remains dedicated to safeguarding public health by upholding international best practices in its operations.

“This incident highlights the importance of accurate information and adherence to established protocols. We urge the public to verify claims before dissemination,” NAFDAC concluded.

Conclusion

The incident has raised concerns about the unauthorized destruction of products and the need for clear communication between regulatory agencies and the public. While NAFDAC continues its investigation into the matter, the agency’s prompt response underscores its dedication to transparency and professionalism in its enforcement duties.
