Nigeria Police Force Expands Gender-Based Violence Desk Offices Nationwide

In a landmark move to enhance human rights protection and access to justice, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the expansion of its Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desk offices to all police divisions across the country.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, was revealed in a press release on February 15, 2025, marking a significant step in tackling GBV and ensuring justice for victims.

Bringing Justice Closer to Communities

Previously, GBV desk offices were only available at zonal and state command levels, limiting accessibility for many victims. With this nationwide expansion, every police division will now house a dedicated GBV desk office, making it easier for survivors of violence to seek help within their local communities. This move is expected to improve service delivery, encourage reporting, and enhance the efficiency of handling GBV-related cases.

Specialized Training for GBV Desk Officers

To ensure professionalism and sensitivity in addressing GBV cases, the IGP has directed that only qualified officers be appointed as GBV desk officers. These officers will undergo specialized training, equipping them with the necessary skills to handle cases with empathy and efficiency. The training will focus on victim support, case management, and legal processes to promote swift justice for survivors.

A Holistic Approach to Protecting Vulnerable Groups

In addition to addressing GBV cases, divisional GBV desk officers will oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children (JWC) section within their respective divisions. This integration is designed to provide comprehensive support to women, children, and juveniles facing abuse or violence, ensuring that vulnerable groups receive the necessary attention and protection.

Encouraging Public Participation in Reporting GBV Cases

Recognizing the widespread issue of gender-based violence in Nigeria, the IGP has urged citizens to report cases of violence to the newly established desk offices. According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2013, 1 in 3 Nigerian women experience physical violence by the age of 15. This expansion of GBV desk offices aims to provide victims with a safe and supportive environment to seek justice and protection.

A Step Towards a Safer Nigeria

This initiative aligns with broader police reforms aimed at improving efficiency, rebuilding public trust, and addressing systemic issues within the force. By bringing specialized GBV services directly to communities, the Nigeria Police Force is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens without discrimination.
