NYSC Member Raye Apologizes Over Viral Rant on Lagos, Explains Her Perspective on Nigeria’s Economic Woes

Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, has issued a formal apology following her viral criticism of the government and Lagos State.

In a new statement shared via Instagram on Monday, Raye expressed regret for her choice of words, clarifying that she never intended to insult Lagosians but was simply sharing her honest observations as a visitor.

Her remarks, which sparked intense debate online, were part of a 30-day rant challenge aimed at spotlighting Nigeria’s pressing economic challenges. However, her first video quickly went viral, resonating with many Nigerians who are frustrated by the harsh realities of inflation, low wages, and high costs of living.

Raye’s Perspective: A Cry for Change, Not Insult

In her statement, Raye acknowledged that her words about Lagos might have offended its residents.

“I want to first of all state that I am sorry to the people who were born and raised in Lagos State if you feel offended by what I said. I am sorry. But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and quality of air here. If the way that I put it triggered your emotions and the love for your birth state, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to talk down on your birth state.”

She further clarified that her viral criticism was never about Lagos alone but a reflection of the broader economic hardship faced by young Nigerians. She highlighted how many professionals, including herself, work over 45 hours a week yet struggle to afford even basic leisure activities.

“I work 45+ hours a week and I should be able to afford hanging out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. But how many of us can actually afford to hang out with our friends? How many can afford that in reality? You spend all week working and can’t even feel alive during the weekends.”

Her statements struck a chord with many young Nigerians, who took to social media to share similar frustrations about rising inflation, stagnant wages, and an overall decline in quality of life.

What the Government Should Learn from Raye’s Criticism

Rather than focusing on the backlash against Raye’s remarks, the Nigerian government should reflect on the valid concerns she raised. Some key takeaways from her perspective include:

1.The Economic Hardship is Real – Nigerians, especially the youth, are struggling with low purchasing power, high costs of essentials, and limited opportunities for financial stability. The government must prioritize economic policies that improve affordability and access to a better quality of life.

2.Youth Dissatisfaction is Growing – The high level of frustration expressed by Raye and many others online signals a growing discontent among Nigerian youths. Leaders should take this as a wake-up call and engage with young people to understand their challenges better.

3.Urban Living Conditions Need Attention – Raye’s comment on Lagos’ environment, particularly its air quality and overall livability, highlights the need for improved urban planning, waste management, and sustainable city development.

4.Better Communication Between Citizens and Government – Rather than dismissing criticisms, the government should establish more open channels of dialogue to engage with citizens, listen to their concerns, and provide transparency in governance.

Polite and Legal Ways to Express Opinions on Social Media

While social media has become a powerful tool for activism and public discourse, it’s important for individuals to express their opinions in a manner that doesn’t violate Nigerian cybercrime laws. Here are some key points to consider:

Avoid Defamation and Hate Speech: Criticizing government policies is allowed, but spreading false information or making defamatory statements can lead to legal consequences.

Use Constructive Language: Rather than personal attacks, focus on discussing policies, governance, and public service delivery in a respectful and solution-driven manner.

Stay Within the Legal Framework: The Cybercrime Act (2015) in Nigeria criminalizes online harassment, defamation, and inciting violence. Understanding these laws can help individuals voice their concerns without crossing legal boundaries.

Leverage Citizen Engagement Channels: Nigerians can engage with policymakers through town halls, petitions, and government feedback portals to push for reforms.

Final Thoughts: A Call for Collective Action

Raye’s rant may have triggered controversy, but it has also ignited important conversations about Nigeria’s economic struggles. Rather than getting distracted by the backlash, Nigerians must continue to demand better living conditions and hold leaders accountable.

As Raye rightly put it:

“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve… If we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better.”
