Police Neutralize ESN Terrorist Kingpins, Dismantle Deadly Camps in Imo State
The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and ensure public safety across the country. Operatives attached to the Imo State Police Command have successfully neutralized three key leaders of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and dismantled their operational base in Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State.
The operation, which took place on January 24, 2025, was launched following credible intelligence on the terrorists’ hideout. Upon approaching the camp, police operatives came under heavy fire from suspected IPOB/ESN terrorists. Demonstrating exceptional bravery, the operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the neutralization of six members of the group, including three notorious kingpins:
- Ifeanyi Anayo (28), a.k.a. Zuma De Rock
- Chukwuemeka Odionyenfe (22), a.k.a. Nmimi
- Kingsley Sunday (21)
All three were natives of Ogube, Ihube, in Okigwe LGA.
Weapons and Assets Recovered
The operation also led to the recovery of substantial weapons and assets, including:
- Five AK-47 rifles
- 552 rounds of live ammunition
- Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)
- Several communication devices
- Eight operational motorcycles
Link to High-Profile Crimes
Investigations revealed that the neutralized group was involved in multiple high-profile crimes, including:
- The attack on the Owerri Correctional Center (April 5, 2021)
- The killing of five policemen in Umunna, Okigwe (December 12, 2022)
- The burning of Arondizuogu Police Station (February 8, 2022)
- Kidnappings, including WAEC staff (June 5, 2023), four reverend sisters (August 21, 2022), and four Chinese nationals (December 6, 2023)
IGP Commends Operatives
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the operatives for their courage and professionalism during the operation. He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to reduce crime across the country and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to ensuring national security and public safety.
In his statement, the IGP urged members of the public to remain vigilant and collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force to foster peace and security nationwide.
