Public Assault: Ogun State Government Suspends Olorile of Orile-Ifo for Six Months

In a decisive move to uphold the dignity of traditional institutions and protect the sanctity of leadership, the Ogun State Government, under the leadership of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, has suspended Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, for six months.

The action follows the monarch’s involvement in a public altercation deemed inappropriate for his esteemed position.

The Kabiyesi was arraigned in court on 4th February, 2025, on three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

He was granted bail while the case was adjourned to 06/03/2025.

Muyiwa Adejobi Force PRO, confirms the arraignment of the erring Monarch via a post on the Force X verified account.

Background of the Suspension

The decision was reached after both the traditional ruler and his alleged victim were summoned for interrogation by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The state government found the Oba’s conduct, including his reckless utterances and public misconduct, to be unacceptable, especially given his revered status.

Videos and reports circulating on social media painted a concerning picture of the monarch’s behavior, prompting widespread public criticism. In response, the government launched an investigation into the incident to determine the extent of the Oba’s culpability.

Official Actions Taken

Following the inquiry, the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council, resolved to suspend the Oba and strip him of his official regalia and privileges pending further findings. The decision aligns with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021, which empowers the government to take disciplinary action against traditional rulers in cases of misconduct.

This suspension serves as a warning to all traditional leaders, emphasizing the government’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the chieftaincy institution. The fate of the Olorile of Orile-Ifo will be determined upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Implications of the Suspension

The suspension of Oba Ogunjobi sends a strong message that the state government will not tolerate any behavior that brings disrepute to traditional institutions. It also reassures the public that leadership, regardless of its form, must be accountable and exemplary.

As the investigation continues, all eyes will be on the next steps taken by the government and the Egba Traditional Council regarding the monarch’s future.
