Babatunde Fashola Urges Nigerians to Harness “Detty December” for Economic Prosperity
Babatunde Raji Fashola, the former Governor of Lagos State and ex-Minister of Works has called on Nigerians to fully embrace the income and prosperity opportunities associated with the festive phenomenon known as “Detty December.”
Speaking at a recent convocation ceremony, Fashola emphasized the potential of this season to transform local economies, attract foreign tourists, and spur national economic growth.
“Detty December” Beyond Lagos
The term “Detty December” has become synonymous with Nigeria’s vibrant end-of-year celebrations, featuring concerts, festivals, parties, and other social events. While Lagos has traditionally been the hub of these festivities, Fashola expressed his desire to see this energy spread across other states. By decentralizing “Detty December,” more regions can tap into the influx of tourists and the accompanying economic activities.
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
Fashola also addressed the logistical challenges that large-scale events can bring, such as transportation, accommodation, and infrastructure strain. However, he reframed these obstacles as opportunities for Nigerians to innovate and earn.
“During the pilgrimage to Mecca, residents often refurbish and let out their homes to accommodate visitors. This is an example of how challenges can be turned into economic opportunities,” he said. He encouraged Nigerians to adopt a similar mindset, creating solutions that not only address immediate needs but also generate sustainable income streams.

The Risk of Missed Opportunities
Fashola warned that if Nigerians fail to capitalize on the opportunities presented by festive tourism, international visitors may divert their attention and spending to other destinations. “If we don’t take advantage, the opportunities will go elsewhere,” he cautioned.
A Call to Action
Fashola’s remarks serve as a reminder of the potential for tourism and event-driven activities to drive economic growth. From transportation services and hospitality to food vendors and cultural showcases, “Detty December” offers a wealth of opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses to thrive.
As the festive season continues to grow in prominence, Fashola’s vision of a nationwide celebration could pave the way for a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria. By embracing innovation and collaboration, Nigerians can ensure that “Detty December” becomes not just a time for enjoyment, but also a driver of economic transformation.
