FRSC Impounds Over 350 Vehicles with Fake Plate Numbers in Nationwide Crackdown

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its nationwide operation targeting vehicles with unauthorised number plates, resulting in the impoundment of over 350 vehicles within a month.

This operation, which commenced on February 3, is part of the Corps’ efforts to enhance road safety and bolster national security.

The FRSC Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed this development in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Abuja. He highlighted that the operation, which initially began in the Federal Capital Territory, was later expanded to all states of the federation. The crackdown targets vehicles bearing fake diplomatic numbers, unrecognised number plates, and other related infractions across private, commercial, government, and diplomatic vehicles.

The Importance of the Operation

The nationwide enforcement aims to curb the proliferation of fake number plates, a menace that poses significant security risks and undermines law enforcement efforts. Mr. Ogungbemide noted that unauthorised number plates can be exploited by criminal elements to evade detection, compromise security, and facilitate unlawful activities.

“The proliferation of fake number plates poses significant security risks, undermining law enforcement efforts and compromising national security,” he said.

Security Benefits and the FRSC’s Commitment

This operation not only enhances road safety but also serves as a critical step toward strengthening national security. Legitimate number plates under the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS) provide a secure and reliable means of identifying vehicles, aiding security agencies in tracking and managing vehicular activities across the country.

Mr. Ogungbemide reiterated the Corps’ commitment to ensuring all vehicles on Nigerian roads operate with legitimate number plates. He urged vehicle owners to acquire legal plates through the NVIS, stressing that the process is both simple and affordable.

The Downside: Disruption and Inconvenience

While the operation has recorded successes, it has also led to concerns about potential inconveniences for motorists. Many vehicle owners have complained about the abruptness of the enforcement, with some genuinely unaware that their plates were unauthorised. However, the FRSC has maintained that ignorance is not an excuse under the law and that safety and security must take precedence.

Avoiding Fake Plate Numbers: Tips for Vehicle Owners

To avoid falling victim to fake plate number distributors, vehicle owners should:

•Always register vehicles through the official NVIS channels.

•Verify the authenticity of their vehicle registration documents with the FRSC.

•Avoid purchasing “fancy” or customised plates from unauthorised sources.

•Report suspicious number plates or distributors to the nearest FRSC office.

The Argument Against Fancy Plate Numbers

Mr. Ogungbemide also addressed the issue of fancy number plates, noting that while they are allowed under the NVIS, they must be obtained legally. He warned that unauthorised fancy plates would attract sanctions, stating:

“It is wrong for anyone to just pick up a board and write their name on it. This country has laws, so things are to be done according to the laws.”

A Call for Public Cooperation

The FRSC has called on the public to cooperate with its personnel during the operation. Motorists are advised to comply with the regulations and assist in promoting a safer and more secure road environment.

As the enforcement continues, the FRSC remains dedicated to its mandate of ensuring safer roads while contributing to national security. The public is encouraged to support these efforts by adhering to road safety regulations and maintaining the authenticity of their vehicle documents.
