How Manchester United Beat Barcelona To Europa League R16

Manchester United on Thursday night defeated Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate to qualify for the next round of the 2022/23 Europa league season.

The Red Devils held Brça to a 2-2 draw at the camp nou last Thursday and beat the La Liga giant 2-1 in the reverse fixture played at Old Trafford.

It was a victory that looked so unlikely at half-time as Barcelona led thanks to Robert Lewandowski’s 18th-minute penalty after Bruno Fernandes’ needless foul on Alejandro Balde.

However, upon the introduction of Fred and Antony, the course and the pace of the game changed for United and for the tie as the Brazilian duo injected more pace into United’s attacks, which the La Liga leaders failed to deal with.

It’s a task achieved, from many of such tasks ahead of Erik ten Hag’s side who will now move on to Wembley, where they will look to collect their first silverware since 2017 when they face Newcastle in the EFL Cup final.

This is the first time that Barcelona will be eliminated from European competition without reaching the last 16 since 1985, which is not quite what president Joan Laporta had in mind when he pulled all those economic levers last year.
