Joy and Jubilation in Enugu as Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns from UK Prison

The Mpu community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State is alive with celebration as Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, returns home after her release from a United Kingdom prison.

Beatrice, who was sentenced to five years for her involvement in an organ trafficking case alongside her husband and Obinna Obeta, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday and is currently in Abuja.

In Mpu, her hometown, the news of her return sparked widespread jubilation. The President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, expressed immense relief and gratitude, saying, “Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. It is a great day for us.”

Chijioke noted the immense contributions of the Ekweremadu family to the community, stating that their absence had caused significant setbacks. He also prayed for God’s intervention in Senator Ekweremadu’s case, expressing hope for his safe return.

Today’s celebrations coincided with the community’s Orie market day, which turned into an impromptu festival of music, dancing, and heartfelt gratitude.

Councillor Ogbuka Edwin described the day as a “public holiday” for the Mpu community, adding that the Ekweremadus’ absence had left a noticeable void. “We will not relent in our prayers until our hero and leader joins his family,” Edwin stated.

The return of Beatrice Ekweremadu marks a moment of collective relief and joy for Mpu, with hopes now pinned on the release of Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Beatrice, her husband and one Obinna Obeta were jailed for the organ-trafficking plot, with different jail terms in 2023 by the United Kingdom court.
