MAPOLY Faces Scandal as 49 Final-Year Students Allegedly Present Fake ND Results

No fewer than 49 final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, are at risk of expulsion after a result verification process uncovered alleged cases of fake National Diploma (ND) results.

The polytechnic’s management, in a verification update released on Thursday, disclosed that the students submitted fake ND certificates during their application for admission into HND programs.

The affected students span various departments, including Mass Communication, Pharmaceutical Technology, Marketing, Science Laboratory Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Accountancy.

Fake Certificates Sourced from Various Institutions

Some of the fraudulent ND results were reportedly obtained from institutions such as The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; and Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, all located in Oyo State.

MAPOLY’s Public Relations Officer, ‘Yemi Ajibola, explained that the verification exercise was part of the institution’s measures to ensure the authenticity of documents submitted by students. Ajibola added that delays in releasing student results were due to the time-intensive verification process.

“We have internal mechanisms to verify results submitted by every student. While some results are still pending confirmation from their issuing institutions, others have been identified as fake,” Ajibola said.

Opportunity for Defense Before Expulsion

Ajibola clarified that the affected students would not face immediate expulsion but would be given the chance to defend their results.

“The institution will notify each affected student to appear and substantiate the authenticity of their documents. Where errors in the verification process are identified, they will be corrected. However, any student unable to prove the validity of their results will be expelled,” he added.

Indefinite Closure and Alleged Protest

Earlier in the week, the polytechnic was indefinitely shut down due to a planned student protest. Tensions escalated further on Thursday, with reports of a confrontation between the students and Ogun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele.

While the government claimed the deputy governor narrowly escaped an attack by the protesting students, the students alleged that her security detail fired shots at them during the incident.

This unfolding situation underscores the critical need for integrity in academic processes and highlights growing tensions between the institution, its students, and state authorities.
