Flying Eagles Beat Ivory Coast 2-1 To Advance Into WAFU B U20 AFCONQ Semis

Nigeria’s U-20 male team, the Flying Eagles, have reached the semi-final of the ongoing WAFU Zone B U20 Boys Championship, the tournament that doubles as the U20 AFCON qualifiers, thanks to a 2-1 victory over Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday evening.

Two quick goals from the Flying Eagles after going down by one goal in the 62nd minute, saw them pip their Ivorian counterparts to the semi-final ticket at the Municipal stadium in Lome, Togo.

Nigeria lost their first game by 1-0 to Burkina Faso in their opening match but bounced back in their second game to seal their place in the last four.

Nigeria Tops Group B

With both Nigeria and Burkina Faso tied on three points, the Flying Eagles advanced to the semifinals due to their superior goal difference. Burkina Faso, despite having the same points, was eliminated after scoring fewer goals.

Semifinal Clash with Niger Republic

The Flying Eagles will now face Niger Republic in the semifinal on Sunday, October 27, 2024. If they secure victory, it will take them one step closer to defending their championship title.

Cash Reward Pledged for Title Win

Mr. Soname, the chairman of Nigeria Premier Football League side Remo Stars, has promised the team ₦5 million if they successfully defend their title and bring the trophy back to Nigeria.

This competition in Togo also serves as a qualifier for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, making every victory even more significant for the Flying Eagles.
