Lagos Assembly Impeachment Drama: Meranda Denies Resignation Amid Obasa’s Fightback

Lagos Assembly Impeachment Drama: Meranda Denies Resignation Amid Obasa’s Fightback

The political landscape of Lagos State has been shaken in recent weeks by a dramatic leadership crisis within the State House of Assembly.

At the storm’s centre is former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, whose impeachment has set off a whirlwind of controversy, power struggles, and misinformation.

Meranda’s Alleged Resignation – Fact or Fake?

Fresh controversy erupted when rumors began circulating that the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, had tendered her resignation.

Social media was awash with claims that she had stepped down, with a widely shared circular dated February 17, 2025, fueling the speculation. However, a closer examination of the document revealed a crucial flaw—it lacked an official signature.

In swift response, Segun Ajiboye, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, debunked the claims, branding them as fake news designed to mislead the public.

“I’m in the office. The Speaker is in the office. I don’t know where that is coming from. This is the handiwork of mischief makers working for the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who have been commissioned to spread fake news on social media to mislead the public and maintain pressure on the current leadership of the House.”

Ajiboye further alleged that “paid bloggers” were responsible for spreading the fake resignation letter, urging Lagosians to ignore the fabricated reports.

Obasa’s Rebellion: ‘I Am Still Speaker!’

Meanwhile, Mudashiru Obasa has refused to accept his removal, maintaining that his impeachment was unlawful. Addressing a gathering of his supporters at his official residence in GRA, Ikeja, Obasa declared that the process that led to his ousting was riddled with irregularities.

According to him, the Assembly used a fake mace to swear in Meranda, while heavy police presence on the day of his impeachment allegedly intimidated his loyalists. Obasa further accused security forces of invading his official residence, restricting the movement of his family members.

With defiance in his voice, the embattled lawmaker vowed to challenge his removal in court and insisted that he would resume as Speaker.

Lagos Lawmakers Fire Back

Despite Obasa’s resistance, the majority of Lagos lawmakers remain firm in their decision. They have warned him not to “heat up the polity” with his actions and urged Lagosians to disregard his claims.

With tensions still running high, all eyes are on the courts, where the final battle for the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership may be decided.

What Next?

The unfolding power tussle raises critical questions about due process, political power play, and the influence of misinformation in governance. Will Obasa make a legal comeback, or is this the final chapter of his leadership in Lagos?
