Osun LG Elections: Police Warns of High Security Threats, Advises Suspension

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong advisory to the Osun State Government, urging the immediate suspension of the planned Local Government (LG) elections due to credible intelligence indicating significant security threats.

In a statement released on Friday, February 21, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police disclosed that various groups—including political elements and other interest parties—are mobilizing to instigate unrest and disrupt public peace.

Security Threats and Legal Complexities

The joint intelligence reports assessed by the police suggest that allowing the elections to proceed under the current conditions could escalate into widespread violence, endangering lives and property. While the police, alongside other security agencies, are prepared to maintain law and order, the force emphasized that preventive measures would be more effective in ensuring public safety.

In addition to security concerns, the police highlighted the legal uncertainties surrounding the elections. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has provided legal clarification following the Court of Appeal judgment on February 10, 2025, which effectively nullified the previous Federal High Court ruling. This latest judgment, according to the NPF, reinforces the stance that the elections lack a firm legal foundation.

Call for Immediate Suspension

Given the dual concerns of heightened security risks and legal ambiguities, the Nigeria Police Force has urged the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the elections immediately. The statement reaffirmed the police’s commitment to safeguarding democracy, maintaining peace, and protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

The police also appealed to political parties and all stakeholders to exercise restraint and prioritize the safety and well-being of citizens during this period.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the Osun State Government to determine the next course of action.
