Yemi Alade May Not Have Won The Grammy, But She Won My Heart – Chiwetalu Agu

Veteran Nigerian actor Chiwetalu Agu has expressed his admiration for music star Yemi Alade, praising her for proudly representing African culture at the 67th Grammy Awards.

While Alade may not have clinched the Grammy win, Agu emphasised that her presence and attire at the event were victories.

“Yemi Alade, you are a queen; the queen you think you are,” Agu said in a video he shared on Instagram on Tuesday.

“She may not have won the Grammy, but she won my heart. If there is nobody to say it, I chief Chiwetalu will give you your flowers while you can still smell them,” he added.

He added that her decision to wear traditional African attire underscored her pride in her heritage saying, “Not only did she represent Afrobeat, she also represented the African culture through her attire at the Grammy Awards. She was not there to impress anyone. Her outfit was screaming, ‘I did not come to impress you. I know my roots.’”

The actor further lauded the ‘Johnny’ crooner for her remarkable qualities beyond her music saying, “Do we talk about how decent and natural she has been as an artist? Or how beautiful she is as a woman or how talented, disciplined, reserved, established and humble she is as a lady?

“Yemi keep on being the role model you are to so many young girls. Chief Chiwetalu admires and loves you so much. I pray you find your ‘Johnny’ at the right time.”

In response to the video, Alade expressed her gratitude writing, “I’m not gonna lie. Someone is cutting one full bag of onions. God bless you sir.”

Alade was nominated in the Best African Music Performance category for her song, ‘Tomorrow.’

“It’s my first time at the Grammys as a nominee,” she had written on Instagram on Monday.

However, Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, secured the award with her song ‘Love Me JeJe.’
