Asake Speaks on Grammy Recognition, MMS, and Working with Wizkid

Afropop sensation Asake has once again etched his name in global music conversations, earning a second Grammy nomination at the 67th Grammy Awards. Although he didn’t clinch the award, the Nigerian hitmaker sees the recognition as a major win on its own.

In an exclusive chat with CityBuzz, Asake, whose real name is Ahmed Ololade discussed his Grammy journey, his chart-topping song MMS, and his gratitude for the people who helped shape his career.

“Being Nominated is a Win Already”

Competing in the Best African Music Performance category, Asake’s MMS went up against some of the biggest names in African music, including Tems (the eventual winner with Love Me Jeje), Davido, Lojay, and Chris Brown.

Despite the stiff competition, Asake remains grateful and optimistic about the recognition:

“It feels good to know that I’m nominated for the second time—it’s a dream come true. I feel really blessed.”

He also expressed admiration for his fellow nominees:

“I love everybody. Whoever wins, it’s a win for all of us. Being nominated for the Grammy is already a win for me.”

MMS: A Story of Gratitude and Growth

Asake’s MMS is more than just a song—it’s a reflection of his journey from humble beginnings to stardom. He describes it as a deeply personal track:

It’s just me telling my story. I come from grass to grace, you know? That’s all the song is about—giving thanks to God for putting me in the position I really want to be.”

The song’s impact was further amplified by the presence of Afrobeats icon Wizkid, whom Asake featured on the track. Speaking about the collaboration, Asake didn’t hold back his appreciation:

“Shout out to Big Wiz! God bless you.”

While Tems ultimately took home the Grammy, Asake’s nomination solidifies his place among Africa’s top music exports, proving that his sound continues to resonate globally.
